Swindon Town head coach Luke Williams is 'no closer' to finding out side's mental frailties

Swindon Town head coach Luke Williams was ironically yet again ruing the lack of consistency with his squad following the 3-1 home defeat against Eastleigh in the FA Cup.

Tuesday night's loss means Swindon have not progressed beyond round one of the FA Cup since 2011, with four of the last six exits coming against non-league sides (Crawley Town, Macclesfield twice, and now Eastleigh).

At full-time head coach Williams bemoaned the fact that his young side have once again put in an abject display just a matter of days after a resounding win - on this occasion a 3-0 thrashing of underachieving but in form, Charlton Athletic.

Every win for the Robins this season has had a 'one step forward, two steps back' feeling to it, with Swindon not yet tasting back-to-back league wins in the league.

The 1-0 win over Coventry on the opening day was quickly followed by a 3-1 loss at Chesterfield, the 2-0 victory at Oldham was undone by a 3-1 home defeat against Northampton while a 3-0 trouncing of Rochdale was swiftly counteracted by a 2-0 reverse against Walsall, and now the positive post-Charlton vibe has been ended by Eastleigh.

Following the 4-1 humiliation at Scunthorpe, Williams publicly called out his side regarding their lack of mental stability when they go a goal down, and when asked by Total Sport if he is any closer to figuring out the resolve for that, he responded:

"On tonight's evidence, no, it does not look like we are.

"We talk a lot with the players about the mental strength to be able to be resilient after conceding the goal and it is a fact that we have kept a clean sheet everytime we have won.

"You cannot go through a whole season never winning from behind - you have to be able to bounce back from a deficit and this group at the moment are not showing that they can do that.

"For one reason or another for the time being we cannot put our finger on why."

At his unveiling on Thursday, new director of football Tim Sherwood outlined the intention to bring more experienced players to the County Ground and Williams believes that added experience would help with the squad's bouncebackability.

"I think it is the most obvious solution - to bring players in that have been there many times and are less fazed."
