TGtS Meets...Carmel Ardrey

Carmel Ardrey, Business Development Manager at Banks BHG sat down with us to chat about work, family life and her career.

Tell us a little bit more about your role within Banks BHG…

My role at Banks BHG is to connect with people in business both from the UK and overseas and introduce our services. I identify new business opportunities and develop new market segments that complement the company's mission and goals. I attend corporate business dinners and breakfast networking events and participate at national industry related trade shows to explain company services.

What are the 3 main things Banks BHG can offer a business?

Firstly we offer direct access to a dedicated team that provides first class advice without the high costs of the larger firms – and we aim to keep it that way. Secondly we guide the owners of small businesses and help them become big sustainable businesses. Thirdly we aim for our clients to pay the least amount of tax payable within the law.

What’s the most popular service that you offer?

The most popular service we offer is tax advice. While no one likes to pay tax, it still stays as one of life's certainties. Although we can’t take away the pain entirely, with good planning advice we can help reduce tax bills.

Do you have a motto or favourite motivational quote?

'Business opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming.'

What advice would you give someone going into a leadership position for the first time?

Be patient with yourself. Developing strong managerial skills takes time – especially as you adjust to your new position. Seek guidance from colleagues, your line manager, or your professional network when you need it. In doing so you will enhance your leadership abilities and make strides toward becoming a great manager.

What’s the biggest challenge facing business leaders today?

Industry is being starved of highly-skilled workers because of a shortage in the number of teenagers studying subjects such as science and math’s to a higher level. This is causing companies to face a crippling skills gap as engineers retire without finding well-trained apprentices and graduates to replace them. This shortage risks putting a brake on the economic recovery. I think there should be a UTC  in every major town because they  ensure young people are well prepared to succeed in vital technical industries.

What’s been your greatest achievement to date?

Studying for 2 law degrees whilst working and raising a family. Believe me, it was hard going but worth it.

When you’re not busy working, how do you like to spend your down time?

I'm usually with my family and am the happiest taking a stroll by the seaside, you can’t beat it and it’s free!
