TGtS Meets...Sophie Moore - International Women's Day Special

New College's PR Marketing and Communications officer, Sophie Moore is the latest of Swindon's successful women to take part in our 'TGtS Meets...International Women's Day Special'.

Which woman would you compare yourself to?

I wouldn’t necessarily compare myself to any other woman. I think that we're all unique in our own way. If I had to chose I'd aspire to be like Katie Piper, a young woman who was attacked with acid in 2008. Katie has a ‘can do’ attitude and never gives up on her dreams. I think that’s an amazing personality trait to have and I think it’s important to be passionate about what you believe in.

What would you say is your most valuable skill and why?

I’m a good listener and I pay attention to what people say, before taking the appropriate action. I can use this skill in my working life and in my social life.

Why do you think it's important to have an International Women's Day?

To recognise the different roles women play in society and how these roles are still changing today.

Do you have family (and/or children)? How do you maintain a work/life balance?

I think it’s really important to maintain a work/life balance so that you can go back into the office feeling refreshed and ready to take on any challenge. I don’t have kids, but I do enjoy spending time with my family and friends. There are times you have to separate your social life and work life so you can be more efficient and focused, and more importantly, happy.

Have you ever had to give up or miss out on anything in order to pursue your career?

In a previous job I used to start work at 5:30am. In order to do this I had to sacrifice my social life at quite a young age. Despite this, it was completely worth it and I gained invaluable experience.

Do you ever experience any discrimination in the work place because of your gender?

Thankfully, I've never experienced any discrimination in the work place.

Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to fellow females looking to get into your profession?

Confidence is key. In my line of work you need to be confident and a good communicator. In PR it’s important to build up relationships with people/organisations in the local community, so you do need to get yourself out there.

Do men ever feel intimidated by your success?

As far as I know men haven’t ever felt intimidated by my success. Everyone is successful in their own way! It’s about making personal goals for you and no one else.

If you could have dinner with 5 inspirational women dead or alive, who would they be?

  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Michelle Obama
  • Katie Piper
  • Princess Diana
  • My mum

As a successful female, where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

Hopefully still working in Public Relations and Events Management. Who knows what door will open next?!
