Swindon's Oldest Businesses - The Jewel In The Crown

In the latest series of our business articles, we are exploring Swindon's oldest businesses and finding out the secrets to their successful longevity. In our second episode we speak to Swindon's much-loved Indian restaurant, The Jewel In The Crown who have been open in the town for over 34 years.

When did your business first open?

We first opened 34 years ago and have been operating as an authentic Indian restaurant in Swindon ever since. We have made changes along the way but still pride ourselves on creating delicious authentic Indian food for the residents of Swindon.

Has your business changed in any way since it opened?

We have undergone some big changes over the years including staff changes behind the scenes, advancements in technology and re-designs of our restaurant. One of the biggest changes has been operating throughout the COVID-19 pandemic where we have had to install new safety measures and changed to a takeaway service only.

How has your business had to adapt over the years?

Like all businesses that have had long periods of success, we have had to continuously adapt to keep up with the times. The advancement in technology since we first opened our doors has been massive and we have had to up-skill ourselves to learn the multiple ways in which technology can make our jobs more productive and improve the dining experience for our guests.

We have also had to change key things such as our marketing strategy with our switch to online digital marketing with local companies so much easier and beneficial for ourselves.

What has been the key to your longevity?

There isn’t one single thing that has been the key to our success, rather a collection of different factors that have allowed us to adjust to the modern times. Our capability to adapt to changing scenarios means we are never left behind, however our excellent food, brilliant customers, and friendly customer service is probably the main reason for our continued success in Swindon.

What has been the biggest challenge for your business?

Like many businesses, the past 12 months and dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic has been the biggest challenge we have ever faced. We typically relied on being busy throughout the week and even busier at weekends when customers would sit and dine in our restaurant however due to the pandemic we have lost this income.

However, we have been able to adapt, now operating as a takeaway-only service and we are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Swindon residents who continue to order from us. We can’t wait to welcome people back into our restaurant very soon!

What advice would you give to new business owners?

Keep things simple and don’t give up even if you fail at the first hurdle. You learn from your failures and these only make success even sweeter.
