Swindon is one of the best cities in the UK to live and work!

Swindon has been named the eighth best ‘city’ in the UK for work, rest and play according to new research by PwC (Price Waterhouse Cooper).

Their annual Good Growth For Cities report carries out research with members of the public across 42 cities and large towns against ten indicators for economic wellbeing. 

Both Swindon and Bristol scored well in the latest report with Swindon getting eighth spot and Bristol coming fourth. They were the most highly ranked in the South West, Plymouth came in at 15th spot. 

The ten indicators of success are:

• Jobs
• Income
• Skills
• Health 
• Housing
• Transport
• Income distribution
• Work life balance
• Business start ups
• Environment

Compared with the same report last year, Swindon ranked particularly highly when it came to transport, housing (owner/occupation), income distribution and environment. However the town slipped a little when it comes to skills in young people aged 16 to 24. These have fallen slightly. 

The top spot overall went to Oxford with Reading and Southhampton coming in second and third. The most improved were Bradford, Liverpool and Norwich. 

One of the report’s conclusions is that all sectors of an area must come together to build success. 

“Achieving broad economic success means engaging with a broad range of organisations across a place, and beyond. This means investing in relationships and building collaborative ways of working, including with communities and people themselves.”
