Doherty’s Big Break for Charity

1997 World Snooker Champion, Ken Doherty hit the baize at Swindon’s 147 Snooker Club on Saturday evening for a thrilling charity exhibition in aid of Ronald McDonald House, Bristol and Nepal’s Earthquake Appeal for Children.

“Crafty Ken” was accompanied by former UK Champion, host of Big Break, and BBC commentator John Virgo, who had the crowd in fits of laughter from the off with tales of the past, witty jokes and a humorous take on commentating throughout the evenings games.

Doherty played nine members from the club with not one of them being able to win a frame. The closest challenger was Troy Paul.

Event organiser Karl Paul said “It was a fantastic evening of snooker, laughs and fundraising, Ken was pure class and people are still talking about it.

“The aim of the evening was to have fun whilst raising funds for charity, I think we accomplished that. The total raised with matching from SJPP was £2,580. So a huge thank you to all who attended; sponsored and helped raise that little bit extra on the night.

“It’s always great to see a ton break and Ken didn’t disappoint the crowd, he knocked in a fantastic 101 clearance which resulted in the roof nearly being lifted.

“The members are already asking who will be coming next, I’ve got a good idea who I think should be on the list so will start the planning in a couple of months time”.

Phipps said of the opportunity to play the former world champion and help raise funds in the process “It was great to see so many local businesses and people come together, have a great time and raise lots of money for two great children charities”.

Doherty went on to say “I love coming to Swindon and in particular the 147 Snooker Club. The Paul family who run the club are very passionate about snooker and the members are always so friendly and welcoming.

“It’s also great to do an exhibition on a table that is of the highest standards and makes it a real pleasure.

“I’ve known the family for a few years and have been involved in raising funds for charity with Karl in the past; I’m looking forward to whatever he has planned next”.
