The Lowdown: Dion Conroy

Swindon Town today (Friday) completed the signing of Chelsea defender Dion Conroy and Ryan O'Donovan, the sports editor of Get Hampshire, has provided a lowdown on the defender that was on-loan at Aldershot this season.

Conroy, a 21-year-old centre back, penned a two-and-a-half year deal at the County Ground after Swindon shelled out an undisclosed fee for the defender.

Just a matter of hours before his signing Conroy was recalled from his loan at the Recreation Ground by parent club Chelsea.

It initially seemed that he would go into Chelsea's side for the FA Cup tie at home to Brentford but instead he found himself on his way down the M4 to sign on the dotted line at Swindon.

Ryan O'Donovan, who kept a close eye on him during his 17 appearances for the Shots, illustrates what Swindon fans can expect from their new signing.

"Conroy signed for the Shots on loan at the end of August as a by-product of the strong partnership that Aldershot Town have with Chelsea as the U23s play the majority of their home games at the EBB Stadium," he begins.

"He made his debut at Boreham Wood, originally as a central midfielder, and quickly impressed with his strong tackling ability and comfort on the ball.

"After missing a few games with a cut foot in training, Gary Waddock moved Conroy to centre back where he went from strength to strength - a decision which was a large part of Aldershot's recent upturn in form.

"He is comfortable on the ball and is able to break out of defence with the ball at his feet and doesn't shy away from a tackle. He is good in the air and has a fierce free kick on him, similar to David Luiz' style.

"He was well liked by the Shots faithful for his role in the upturn in form which has seen their season go from dead in the water to play-off contenders, as well as being a genuinely nice guy who had time for fans after the games.

"His ability was well above that of the National League and I think everyone at the club knew what a good player they had on their hands. "

Conroy will wear the number 25 while at Swindon and is eligible to make his debut in the West Country derby against Bristol Rovers tomorrow (Saturday, 12:45 kick-off).
