NEW COLLEGE SPORT STUDENTS SUPPORT OASIS ACCESS EVENT MAR 12 2020
Sport students from New College Swindon put their skills into practise at the annual SEN sports event last week, which was hosted at Oasis, for over 170 children in the area.
SEN students from schools across the Swindon area were given the chance to get involved in a number of sporting activities, which New College students assisted with. Learners from Crowdys, Warneford, Oakhurst, Millbrook, Westlea, Grange, Oakhurst, Haydonleigh, Lainesmead, Westrop, RLK, Abbeymeads, Orchid Vale, Commonweal, Swindon Academy/Lethbridge, Moredon, Moutford Manor, Eldene, St Francis, Fynmore and Shaw Ridge attended.
New College students helped the instructors deliver a variety of activities, including: archery, swimming, football, athletics, seated dance, boxing, tennis, wheelchair basketball, hockey, boccia, table cricket and parachute games.
The College has been supporting the event for almost ten years. It gives students the opportunity to gain experience working with children with learning and physical disabilities and organising activities to be inclusive. This helps to develop communication skills with young children, parents, instructors and teachers. They learn how to organise and run a successful event - skills which are extremely important for employability.
Sue Harrison, Level 1 & 2 Programme Leader, said: “It was fantastic seeing our learners outside the classroom environment and witnessing their self-esteem and confidence develop as the day proceeded. Our learners gain information about working with children with disabilities and inclusive sports. It is a joy to see them put their learning into a realistic situation and gain so much pleasure and reward working with these wonderful children.”
