Vic Morgan: The Scunthorpe autopsy

Lifelong Robins fan Vic Morgan gives his authoritative say on all things Swindon Town, every Tuesday on Total Sport. This week Morgan writes in the aftermath of the almost unspeakable 6-0 Easter Monday defeat to Scunthorpe United...

Happy Easter! Well for Swindon Town's fans it turned out to be anything but.

Okay, the defeat by Wigan on Good Friday was by a much superior team. Bigger, stronger and quicker in most departments. As for the loss at Scunthorpe? Abysmal.

I can't remember a game in which I've seen a Swindon team so devoid of anything positive in any areas of the pitch. There have been some low points this season, Millwall and Fleetwood away spring to mind.

There've also been some highs on the road, Chesterfield was a memorable day. Easter Monday? Awful.

I know there are some mitigating circumstances. The suspension of captain Nathan Thompson and injuries to Jon Obika and Lawrence Vigouroux are bound to have an impact. However, no getting away from it, the defeat at Glanford Park was a shambles.

I write this on the way back to Devon after the game. I don't say that for any sympathy, it's my decision to go. What I'm saying is that it's a hollow feeling on an almost silent supporters coach. The immediate post match anger has subsided and thoughts are that maybe this season still has the possibility of a worrying finish.

What we need now is another win and quickly to banish any fears of a troubled last few games and that win would be very welcome against Fleetwood on Saturday. The only consolation as I write this, is that it's still light and will be for most of the journey. There's no other.

I'm not overreacting, but it's fair to say there's a fair amount of concern amongst the fans who were at Scunthorpe. They could see nothing in that performance that might have given them confidence for the last few games of this middling campaign.

What it needs is for the team to come out on Saturday and show intent from the off. Play to win the game and get rid of the concerns that I've been writing about. As fans we understand when we're beaten by the better team, like Wigan. We don't understand when we see a capitulation like at Scunthorpe.

Credit to a couple of the players who came over to the supporters at the end, most of the team beat a hasty retreat down the tunnel.

You see our pride is hurt and we hope the players felt that too. I'm not a moaner but I'm not a happy clapper either. I basically write what I see. What I saw on Monday was unacceptable.

As you can tell it's still a bit raw but it's how I feel. I'll be there on Saturday and at Oldham on Tuesday because I choose to be and I want to be. I want those who play for my team to want to be, too.
