Vic Morgan: Not Another Fleetwood Performance Please

Lifelong Swindon Town fan Vic Morgan writes for Total Sport every week. Following last weekend's demise against Fleetwood, Morgan says now is the time for the players to truly pull out their finger...

I'm not going to sugar coat it. Saturday at Fleetwood was a stinker!

There are times when you have to admit that your team were awful and Saturday was one of those occasions.

Sometimes when results go against you there are some positives. I can't think of many from the weekend. For the two hundred and forty plus Town fans that made the long journey to the Highbury Stadium, it was an afternoon as depressing as the recent trip to Millwall. In a way it was worse.

The victory over Scunthorpe gave us some hope that this miserable season was about to take a turn for the better. After all, we'd seen a victory over one of the form sides of the division with an impressive second half display. Sadly though, that optimism was ill founded.

Fleetwood aren't one of the better teams in the division. The Cod Army's place in the bottom four is an indication of that. The fact that Swindon allowed them to cut through a wafer thin defence time and time again even more difficult to take.

It was an awful afternoon on the Fylde coast. New Fleetwood manager Steven Presley was obviously delighted with his side's win. The former Coventry boss had only one complaint and that was conceding Nicky Ajose's consolation effort.

In truth, Swindon fans had by that time long since given up the ghost and some even missed the Town goal because they'd nipped over to the local chippy to warm themselves up. A chip shop, by the way, that doesn't sell cod, odd, bearing in mind the team's nickname.

So where do we go from here? Well, there was a fair amount of abuse directed at some players. Please cut that out.

Okay you may have been frustrated and angry. I certainly was. After the game I described the performance as an absolute shambles. It was. I don't believe though in shouting at individuals. We don't have a team full of the worlds best players, obviously. Sometimes we should recognise their limitations and accept them. I will always support the team during a game, that's what we're there for.

I think what most fans won't accept though, and rightly so, are players who don't appear to give their all in a game. Supporters give time and money following the team, they should get respect from the team in the effort they put in. If you don't want to play for a side then move on, it's as simple as that.

Right, so that said, it's back to business against Walsall. Let's give it a go Swindon. If you get beaten but put on a performance, then so be it. No repeat of Saturday please. There are calls on people's money in the next few weeks. Football may not be one of them after too many Fleetwoods.
