Transfer analysis: Tyler Reid

Tyler Reid’s arrival at Swindon Town all but confirmed the exit of Kyle Knoyle from the club with the right-back yet to sign the new deal offered to him by club manager Richie Wellens.

But as one player leaves and another arrives, who really is Swindon Town’s latest addition? Total Sport Swindon’s Ryan Walker gives his transfer analysis.

Richie Wellens promised an influx of players at the County Ground this summer as the Town manager looked to clear out the deadwood within his side. And whilst the signing of Reid won’t write the headlines, Swindon’s latest recruit is certainly one to watch heading into next season.

At the age of 21, Reid is - in comparison to some of his STFC counterparts - a youngster to the men’s professional game. After working his way through the academy ranks at Arsenal, Reid switched to play for Manchester United at the age of 14 where he joined up with England international Marcus Rashford before departing the club on a permanent deal to Championship side Swansea City in 2016.

Reid made an instant impact on arrival at the Welsh side playing a key part in the under-23’s league and cup double before joining League Two outfit Newport County on a short loan during the 17/18 season.

A right-back by trade, Reid fits the bill as an automatic replacement for the outgoing Knoyle, with the young full-back suited to Wellens’ style of play after identifying himself as an “attacking fullback.”

Wellens will aim to instill his football philosophy in his squad throughout their pre-season after their disappointing finish last season, and it appears that Reid is one player at the forefront of the manager's plans after Swindon offered the 21-year-old his first senior professional contract with Reid now a permanent STFC player until 2021.

Kyle Knoyle was arguably Swindon’s best player last season and Reid must now work hard to not only adapt to the men's game but to also establish himself as one of the league's most productive defenders as Town once again push for promotion.

Speaking to the club website following the move, Reid said:

“I can’t wait to get cracking. All I want to do is fight for first-team football. The place looks good and I’m ready for it to be my home.

“The Gaffer has said he wants to give me a chance and I’m ready to take it," he said.
