Swindon Town's Luke Williams believes "there is fight in the belly" of his players

Swindon Town head coach Luke Williams does not think he will have a problem in picking his side up again following a heartbreaking loss to Chesterfield on Saturday.

Swindon, despite dominating throughout, were unable to get many clear-cut chances on goal at home to Chesterfield on Saturday, and, bizarrely, they ended up on the losing side when Reece Mitchell struck a 90th-minute winner for the away side.

Despite the demoralising defeat, Williams does not think his squad will take such a negative effect that they will be downbeat going into another crucial game, Port Vale away, next weekend.

Williams spoke to the press moments after the final whistle but he did confirm to Total Sport that he did have a word with the players at full-time before facing the assorted media.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Williams said:

"I spoke to the players, I've said that I'm not disappointed with the effort, I'm not disappointed with the execution of the gameplan, I'm disappointed that we didn't get what I can consider I think we deserved, which is at least, a minimum, a draw.

"My personal opinion we deserved to win because we did more to win so (I am) very, very disappointed but it's the wrong time to talk too much because who wants to listen properly and focus and take on information when their guts are wrenched out? So I don't think it's the right moment to speak to the players for too long.

"(I will have) no problem to lift them up again because there is fight in the belly of the players. We've seen (that) in the recent weeks.

"I defy anyone to say they're not trying, they're not fighting, that they're not together - they are.

"Like I say, 10 seconds away from a draw is not perfect but it shows, again, that the team are on the front foot, that they're trying to win, that they can defend properly, that they put their bodies on the line, that they will run.

"Anyone that needs any evidence of the players - look at the two full-backs. The distance that they ran, the high-intensity miles that they ran was incredible.

"They don't need too much lifting up because they're prepared and they've got no problem with that. They need to lick their wounds and be ready."
