OPINION: Who should be Swindon Town's next manager?

As Swindon's search for a new manager rumbles on, Total Sport's Ryan Walker has evaluated three of the candidates that could be likely to land the top job.

Alan Archibald

Currently manager of Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership, Alan Archibald leads he line as the favourite to replace the vacant managerial position at Swindon Town following the departure of Luke Williams.

Having endured a successful 16-year playing career as a defender in Scotland, making over 350 appearances for Thistle along with playing for Dundee United between 2003-07, it’s safe to say that Archibald has a firm understanding of the footballing world.

Made manager of Partick Thistle in January 2013, the 39-year-old has so far endured a successful managerial career, guiding Thistle to the Championship title in his debut season along with making it to the final of the Scottish Challenge Cup, which they eventually lost on penalties to St Mirren.

Keeping Thistle in the top tier of Scottish football for three successive seasons makes Archibald the type of established manager that Swindon Town truly need, however his affiliation with Partick looks set to make it a no go with Archibald rumoured to be looking set to stay in Scotland.

Steve Evans

Another Scot makes the list as Steve Evans, currently manager of League Two Mansfield Town, could be set to take over the reigns at the Country Ground next season.

A short playing career ended by a knee ligament injury at the age of just 24 has led to Evans becoming an established manager of lower league football.

His biggest managerial achievement to date comes during his time at Rotherham United where he guided the club to back-to-back promotions, taking them from League Two to the Championship in two seasons.

His ability of working on a strict budget whilst still being able to get the best out of his players, along with producing an attractive attacking style of football, makes Evans the type of manager that Swindon Town fans are hoping will come into the club and get them back into League One at the first time of asking.

Chris Ramsey

Having been out of a managerial role since 2015, after being sacked by QPR, Chris Ramsey is perhaps the most surprise inclusion for the Swindon Town vacancy. However his experience of coaching and managing at the highest levels of British football could make him the smart choice for Lee Power.

Last managing QPR, Ramsey has had a mixed managerial career to date where after taking charge of the England U20 squad in 1998 and departing in 2000, had an absence of 15 years from British management before taking charge of the London club in 2015 on an initial caretaker basis following the sacking of then manager Harry Redknapp.

His 100 appearances for Swindon Town between 1984-87 during a successful playing career are what will endear the 55-year-old to fans of the Wiltshire club the most and many would surely welcome him to the club with open arms.
