Total Guide to Supports Dementia Friendly Film Screenings with Charitable Donation

Swindon Theatres is set to continue its Community initiative “Memory Cinema” in 2019 with the help of our £250 donation and the support of other organisations.

Following successful screenings in 2018, Swindon Theatres is hosting a further season of classic films for people living with dementia, their families and carers to enjoy together.  Supported by Swindon Borough Council, Total Guide to Ltd and Home Instead Senior Care, the aim of these relaxed screenings is to make cinema a key part of a dementia friendly community by providing a fun, accessible and inclusive experience in a safe and welcoming environment.

Studies have shown that when people receive a dementia diagnosis they often find cultural activities such as going to the cinema can become off limits, sometimes leading to isolation and depression.  The aim of these events is to help people with dementia to build their confidence and do something they enjoy.

Research from the Alzheimer’s Society has shown that participating in the arts, including watching films can make a real difference to people with dementia.  Films offer other ways to communicate when verbal communication becomes difficult and they don’t rely on complex sequencing which is impacted by the condition.

Liz Ledger, Director at Total Guide to said: "We sadly lost my Grandmother 10 years ago to Alzheimer's, and although it was a difficult journey to see her deteriorate from her initial dementia diagnoses, I remember how listening and dancing to her favourite music and watching old films used to bring the twinkle back in her eyes and make her happy. When a colleague made me aware of this community initiative and that it was at risk of not going ahead due to lack of funding, I wanted to help and make sure it would go ahead for another year and help other families suffering with this terrible condition. I am so glad we have been able to help and that they will be going ahead early 2019".

Nyree Kingsbury, Community & Education Officer for Swindon Theatres said: “The films for the season have been chosen for their nostalgia for a bygone age, have a classic story and have a feel good factor about them.  We look forward to welcoming patrons to the Arts Centre to enjoy these films in a relaxed and safe environment – we encourage people to sing and dance should they wish to!”
