Therapy Radiographers muddy up for 10 mile charity mud run

Six Therapy Radiographers braved the Sodbury Slog for Swindon children’s charity Jessie May

A team of Therapy Radiographers braved the 10 mile Sodbury Slog mud run over the weekend, raising more than £1,600 for Swindon children’s hospice at home charity Jessie May.

The six Therapy Radiographers, from Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre, ran through water-filled ditches and muddy obstacles on Sunday in support of the Bristol-based charity, whose nurses provide at-home hospice care to terminally ill children.

‘Team Radiotherapy’ was made up of Emily Duguid, 40, Amy Richardson, 29, Ellie Cradock, 34, Sophie Owen, 27, Sarah Hebert, 35 and Lauren Beckett, 31; all of whom give treatment to children with cancer in the Radiotherapy department at Bristol.

All six Therapy Radiographers completed the multi-terrain challenge on Sunday, which kicked off at Chipping Sodbury Sports Centre. They have more than doubled their original £600 fundraising target, raising over £1,600 for Jessie May.

Therapy Radiographer Emily said: “It was a fantastic day! The sun was shining and lots of people came out to support us.

“Sarah finished as the 9th fastest female so we were all very proud of her for that. All of us made it round and enjoyed a lovely pub roast afterwards once we had washed off all the mud!”

“It was our privilege to raise money to help the children and families the Jessie May nurses support.”

Helen Mackie, Community Fundraising Officer at Jessie May, said: “It was incredible to cheer on our amazing ‘Team Radiotherapy’ on the weekend and watch them take on the lung-busting ‘Slog’. The weather was suitably rainy in the run up to the race, so we knew they were in for a muddy morning!

“This is really a challenge like no other and everyone at Jessie May is extremely proud of all the girls’ efforts. They looked fantastic too – with beautiful face glitter and matching purple headbands on at the starting line. Obviously by the end there was mud galore - but smalls all around!

“As well as taking on this really intense challenge, the team managed to knock their fundraising target out of the park, and have since raised over £1,600 for our charity. This incredible amount of funding will go a long way at Jessie May, by going towards funding the Jessie May Nurses and the vital work they do in the homes of terminally ill children. Thanks so much to our amazing ‘Team Radiotherapy’ – you’re all mucky, muddy winners to us!”
