Pupils Make A Splash for Sport Relief
Pupils dived into a charity challenge at Highworth Recreation Centre to raise money for Sport Relief.
A total of 220 children from Southfield Junior School took to the pool and swam 4,996 lengths – just over 78 miles. The mammoth effort was the equivalent of travelling from Highworth all the way to Kew Gardens in London.
The pupils’ aim was to complete the distance of a marathon, but they ultimately swam three times their target.
The whole school took part, including some teaching and support staff. Children of all abilities, including those with physical disabilities, embraced the challenge from non-swimmers using swimming aids to competitive club swimmers.
Amy, 11, of Highworth Swimming Club, said: “We have swimming lessons at The Rec and I also train with Highworth Swimming Club. I am very happy that the school has raised lots of money as I know it is for a good cause.”
Millie, 11, Southfield’s head girl, said: “I thought it was a good idea for Sport Relief and we have never done anything like this before. It was a great experience and I’m really proud to be a part of it.”
Tom, 11, the school’s head boy, said: “It’s great that the whole school was involved and everyone put in a lot of effort.”
Headteacher Nicola Anderton said: “I was really pleased with the enthusiasm the children showed and I think they exceeded their own expectations. I thought they did a fantastic job and am so proud of them.”
Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Strategic Transport and Leisure, said: “I would like to congratulate all the pupils and staff from Southfield Juniors for a truly outstanding achievement.
“It is great that so many children took part in the challenge in their local pool to raise money for a great cause.”
