Vic Morgan: Lightning Does Strike Twice For Swindon Town

Lifelong Town fan Vic Morgan writes every week for Total Sport. After recent results, Morgan has been left both frustrated and overjoyed by the way matches have been panning out. Despite six points on the board following the previous two home games, it hasn't been easy for the nerves.

Lightning doesn't strike twice apparently. Well I doubt there's a Swindon fan who agrees with that right now.

In the past two home game we've gone from total frustration to total elation in the space of about an hour. Captain Nathan Thompson has been forthright of his criticism of fans who've been displeased with the way the team has started the last couple of matches at the County Ground.

While I agree it's never palatable to hear your own supporters jeering the side, perhaps the annoyance of the faithful is understandable bearing in mind the way things went in the opening few minutes against Southend and Crewe.

It's fair to say most of the reaction was based on total bemusement when goals were conceded in such an easy way. I'm not sure what sort of affect that had on the team, but boy it looked like something brought about an astonishing change...twice.

What is obvious is that this team has spirit. Twice in two weeks they've come back from a couple of goals down to carve out vital wins. It means the league position is more comfortable and the bottom four is now a little further away.

We're also seeing both main strikers in a great run of form. Jon Obika and Nicky Ajose, are banging in the goals left right and centre. In the last two home games, we've seen thirteen goals and a couple of breathtaking comebacks.

Okay the entertainment value has been brilliant but the blood pressure has been boiling. It's got to the point that we have no idea how matches are likely to turn out.

Having watched the so called top match between Liverpool and Manchester United on Sunday, I know which game provided better value. No question, Swindon's win over Crewe won hands down. All the hype that goes into the so called best league in the world, couldn't hide the fact that the match at Anfield was a stinker.

Sometimes though, it would be nice to be able to relax a little when the Town play. Fingernails are being chewed and hair torn out at an alarming rate.

One of the shocks of the season happened over the weekend. While on the way from Devon to Swindon for the Crewe game, the news came through that former Swindon striker Charlie Austin was on his way to Southampton for four million pounds.

For me, Charlie is the best natural finisher I've ever seen. His uncanny ability to find the net is stunning. I was lucky to have commentated on many of the goals that the former Poole forward scored for the Town and the way he could sniff out a chance was remarkable.

I find it difficult to believe that some of the sides higher up the Premier League didn't take a punt on Austin. Four million in this day and age is astonishing for a player with his eye for a goal.

I hope he stays injury free and you never know he might just have an outside chance of making the England squad for the Euro's. Wouldn't surprise me in the least.
