Swindon Town's Luke Williams happy with squad unity after Coventry win

Swindon Town head coach Luke Williams and his side had a win to celebrate for the first time in seven matches after a 3-1 victory at all-but relegated Coventry City.

A brace from on-loan Nicky Ajose, and a goal from Jon Obika inbetween Ajose's goals, had Town in a 3-0 lead and they secured their first win since mid-January despite George Thomas hitting a 90th-minute consolation goal for the hosts.

At full-time the young Robins, who do not and have not had, a player over the age of 26 all season, huddled together in a sign of togetherness as they continue to fight against relegation from the third tier.

Williams, in his post-match press briefing, gave an insight into the reasons why the squad gathered together in such a fashion.

"I think it was a moment to say 'we've fell at too many hurdles this campaign' and that this was a potential banana skin," Williams said.

"This pitch (which was worn due to Coventry groundsharing with Rugby Union side Wasps) doesn't suit us - it's so drastically different to the County Ground, against a team that's scrapping and need the points as much as we do.

"I just tried to get the boys to understand, together, that the extended squad is needed and this type of attitude, this type of commitment to each other and the club is what's needed.

"I've said many times in the past - I don't beleive that players have not tried or have not given everything this season but sometimes you don't actually know what it is that you need to do and the attitudes that you need to adopt.

"So many players are learning so many things this campaign and it was really to try and tell them, in the mode when they feel proud and the moment they realise how hard they've worked what is essential to win these types of games, to reinforce in that moment and try to capture.

"Hopefully it'll have an effect on the group going forward."

Swindon are in action in the not-too-distant future as they host Gillingham as early as Tuesday and Williams will be hoping his inspiring post-match words come to fruition, as Town have not won back-to-back league games all season.
