Swindon Town sign trialist winger Donal McDermott on one-year deal

Swindon Town have completed the signing of trialist winger Donal McDermott on a free transfer.

McDermott, a 27-year-old winger, has been one of five trialists at Swindon Town this summer and has featured in both pre-season friendles, against Swindon Supermarine and Melksham Town.

He began his professional career at Manchester City in 2008 but never broke into the first-team fold at the Etihad Stadium, despite loans to MK Dons, Scunthorpe, Chesterfield and Bournemouth during that time.

In 2011, he signed for Huddersfield Town, but only managed nine appearances in his solitary season there and he returned to Bournemouth in 2012, where he spent two further years of his career.

McDermott had to rebuild his career at Dundalk, Salford City and Ramsbottom in 2014 and 2015 but found himself back into the Football League with Rochdale in 2015.

He penned a two-year deal at Rochdale, which expired this summer, but was offered fresh terms at Spotland, however he has turned that down to sign for Swindon.

Manager David Flitcroft said post-Supermarine that a number of clubs enquired about McDermott's services for a trial.
