Swindon Town manager David Flitcroft hoping to finalise deals for Tom Smith and Jake Evans

Swindon gaffer David Flitcroft is trying to keep youth academy graduates Tom Smith and Jake Evans at the club.

The pair, both 19, are out of contract at Swindon at the end of the month and could therefore leave the club for free if they do not sign an extension to their current deals.

They were both loaned out to Ireland-based club Waterford, also owned by Town chairman Lee Power, in the second half of last season and impressed for the Blues before being recalled by Swindon.

Smith was used in his primary central midfield role while Evans was deployed at right-back. He, like Smith, is naturally a centre midfielder but he did also play right-back in a number of Town development matches.

Flitcroft has confirmed that the duo both have been offered fresh terms and he added: "We're just waiting to close them off, and again I want to meet all the young players.

"The next part of what I'm doing is seeing what they're prepared to do and seeing what they're prepared to commit to.

"If they want to follow the new rule and the new line and the new discipline and want to work hard then they'll be a part of what we do.

"I'm desperate to meet the younger players and seeing what they've got in their locker."

Smith joined Swindon in 2009 and signed a professional deal at the club last summer after scoring a goal in his one league appearance of the season last campaign, in a 3-1 win at Crewe.

The centre midfielder had earlier made his club and professional debut in a 3-0 defeat at Preston in 2015 but started to get more minutes this season.

He featured in eight League One matches, including the entire 90 minutes in a 3-0 win over Rochdale at the County Ground, and got 40 minutes in the 1-0 victory at home to Bradford as a left-back as opposed to his usual role in the heart of the midfield.

Smith also played in three of Swindon's four EFL Trophy matches, and only missed the 3-2 defeat to Luton in the first knockout round due to suspension.

Evans has had less football in a Swindon shirt but did play the entire 90 minutes of that EFL Trophy match against Luton that Smith was forced to sit out of and Evans also came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw at Exeter in the same competition.

He made his league debut for the club in the 3-0 win over Shrewsbury on the final day of last season, coming on as a 79th-minute replacement for Ellis Iandolo. Evans also got nine minutes in the aforementioned Rochdale win.

Meanwhile, captain Nathan Thompson is set to depart the club officially, as he is having a medical at Portsmouth tomorrow (Thursday).
