Swindon Town confirm the capture of former Chelsea midfielder

Swindon Town have confirmed the signing of former Chelsea midfielder George McEachran on a deal until the end of the season. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports on the signing.

The 22-year-old joins former manager at youth level Jody Morris at Swindon, having been in the yout set-up at Chelsea and spent time in The Netherlands on loan with Cambuur and Maatschappelijke Voetbal Vereniging Maastricht.

The midfielder, who joins initially until the end of the season with an option to extend for a further year, has also played for England at youth level in the under-16s, 17s, 18s, and 19s, and won the FIFA under-17 World Cup in 2017.

Morris said: “He [McEachran] is really good around the place, has a great energy and is someone who I think can instantly bring a bit of quality.

“Even after his first training session, there were quite a few comments about what they [the players] saw in training with him.

“Any time you have an opportunity to bring someone in who can improve the group, you have to try and do it.

“He is hungry at the moment, because for whatever reason his career hasn’t hit the heights that he would have been hoping for, and I liked where he was at the moment because he just wanted to get down to work and come and train.

“The fact that he walks through the door and looks like one of the fittest lads and can show his quality, is what makes me happy.”

In addition to his World Cup success, McEachran was also a runner up in the 2017 under-17 UEFA European Championship with England and was apart of the Chelsea squad that won the UEFA Europa League in 2019.

McEachran was also keen to stress that despite having been born in Oxford, he is not a supporter of the club.

He said: “It feels great to be here and back in football at a really great club.

“I’m delighted to be a part of Jody’s team and what he is trying to achieve here with a relatively young side, and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m a player that likes to get on the ball using my technical ability and create chances, so I’m hoping I can get some minutes under my belt early on and focus on pinning down a regular starting place in this team
to drive us forward.”

Sandro Di Michele, said: “George will bring real energy and technical quality to our midfield, so this is a fantastic signing for us.

“He has good pedigree from his time at Chelsea, and now has the opportunity to fulfil his potential here at Swindon Town.”
