Speedway GP preview: Tai Woffinden

With the British FIM Speedway Grand Prix about to get underway in the city of Cardiff. Total Sport ’s Ryan Walker caught up with current British World Champion Tai Woffinden to get his thoughts on the big day ahead.

With over 50,000 fans expected at the Principality Stadium on Saturday evening, the British GP really is the biggest event in the series, and Tai Woffinden admits he can’t wait to get out there.

“For sure I am definitely looking forward to the GP tomorrow evening," Woffinden began.

“It really is one of the biggest events in the calendar up there with Warsaw and it should be a great night.

“I’ve had a fairly good practice so we will just have to see how tomorrow go’s now," he added.

With the British SGP being the only GP in the series held within Woffinden’s home country, it really is a special event to the Scunthorpe born rider. However the two-time world champion admits he is approaching it as a normal event on the series.

“The British GP is great to British riders but it is what it is to me once out on that start line.

“You try to approach it as a normal GP and the main aim for me is to focus on winning the World Championships not just one GP," Woffinden said.

Currently sitting in second place in the World Championship standings on 48 points, Woffinden is extremely eager to start his pursuit of leader Greg Hancock. And going into tomorrow’s event, Woffinden is feeling great.

“ I always feel really good going into a GP now matter how hard things have been.” Woffinden explained.

“ There is still a lot more to come from me at both club and GP level this year.

“ I’m getting faster and faster as the season goes on so I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.” He added.

As a top rider winning any Speedway Grand Prix is special, but with this being his hometown event, Woffinden told of how much a win in Cardiff would top the lot.

“ If I did manage to win tomorrow then it certainly wouldn’t just be another GP win to me.” Said Woffinden.

“ But in the long run of things that ‘s all it is in the series.

“ It would be a massive victory here so I’m hoping to achieve it," he added.
