Rohan Tungate aiming to get back to his best

Following last week’s impressive 50-41 victory for the Swindon Robins over title rivals Belle Vue Aces, Rohan Tungate spoke to Total Sport about the potential and capability in the current side, and how dropping down to reserve has actually helped his racing.

Two disappointing defeats for the Robins last week and the high flying start that Belle Vue had made to their season campaign, many were expecting another defeat for the Rossiter's side when the Manchester based side came calling.

However a fantastic win for the Robins saw them rise to sixth in the Elite League table and was, according to Swindon's Rohan Tungate, the sign of a perfect response.

“It was definitely the perfect response from last week,” Tungate began.

“It was a better result and now we have a good setup hopefully we can keep going forward.

“A night like that is definitely good for team confidence and my confidence.

“It’s been a bit stop start so far this season because of the rain offs and stuff but hopefully that’s the last of it and we can start to get a few more meetings under our belts," he added.

Following the recent high scoring performances of Charles Wright, Tungate has dropped down into reserve with Wright now becoming a heat leader in the team, due to the introduction of averages for reserves. And while Tungate is disappointed to have dropped down position, he does agree that it has taken some pressure off of his riding.

“It’s definitely took some of the pressure off of my shoulders and more importantly has helped me get some more fresh air on the track,” Tungate explained.

“It’s also allowed me to win more races easier, and whilst it’s not the start I wanted it’s good to get some fresh air and get a feel of the track.

“I think my riding will now start to get better and I’ll move back into the main body of the team soon.

“Hopefully by then ill be fully up to speed with things and ready to go forward again,” he stated.

Failing to score in last weeks home meeting to the Wolverhampton Wolves, it was clear that Tungate was struggling with what appeared to be an injury and he Australian born rider confirmed to Total Sport that he probably shouldn’t of ridden.

“I’m over the injury that I had last week and being honest I probably shouldn’t of rode,” Tungate admitted.

“I had a really sore hip last week and my fingers were in so much pain that I couldn’t grip properly.

“The track last week wasn’t great so I didn’t make it easy for myself either and you learn from these things.

“But tonight was a big positive and we can take that away and come back next time feeling good,” he said.

In the pits on the night it was clear to see that Jason Doyle was fully fulfilling his role as team Captain and was constantly giving advice to his fellow riders and helping with their bike setups. And Tungate admits that Doyle is doing the perfect job as skipper.

“Doyley [Jason Doyle] is definitely the ideal captain and you can’t fault him at all,” said Tungate.

“He’s a good team man and will always be there to help you if you need anything.

“It’s good to have him in the side and we’re lucky to have such a great skipper,” he added.
