PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Swindon v Gillingham

Follow along with live updates as Gavin Gunning speaks to the press ahead of Swindon Town's clash with Gillingham. Total Sports' Joe Acklam reports live from the press conference.

12:46PM

That is all from today. Hopefully there will be a game this time around.

12:46PM

I asked Williams about Lindsey leaving and what has changed:

  • It was a shock, I have not seen a manager leave a team at the top of a league for a lower one.
  • We are just playing a bit quicker, but that something Lindsey wanted us to do and sometimes we couldn't do it.
12:41PM

Jonny Williams on his place in the team:

I don't know. I don;t want to blow my own trumpet, but I have always given my best. January is hard as people will want our players, but to be promoted and stay there it is important to keep a core group and then build on it. I am not talking about McKirdy, he got a great offer and the club got a lot of money, so it was a great move on all sides.

12:39PM

Jonny Williams on what factors play into him staying:

Money is important but not everything. You want to be valued and be a part of something. Many things, location as well. Big things are feeling valued, being apart of something, going to work every day and looking forward to it, and the manager playing you.

I guess it is football, you never really know what will work. The turnover in the summer was huge, we let a lot of good people go. In order to be successful you need to keep good people here, value people and keep a strong bond between the fans and in the dressing room. Sometimes it works, but sometimes you get injured. I really don't know what will happen. I have loved my time here and I am desperate to get promotion. I would like to stay, but we have to come to an agreement.

12:36PM

Jonny Williams on Gillingham:

They are a team on the up.They had a really tough first half of the season. Some times when you go down it is tough to go again. They have signed some really good players, so they are serious about staying up, It will be tough, but if we play like Grimsby it will be fine.

12:35PM

Jonny Williams on his contract:

I signed under the embargo back in 2021, I have really enjoyed my time here. I am up in the summer, but I want to stay. If we can get something sorted then amazing, but if not then who knows. I have loved my time here, the fans have been amazing since I came in. There are a number of factors, I would love to get promoted and stay and if the offer is there then I would consider staying. We will see.

12:33PM

Jonny Williams on new manager:

WE know the model is possession based and attacking, It is a great opportunity for a manager with where we are in the league and with a big club. It is really important we keep our best players to be serious about promotion, we want to keep them and have the guys coming back in.

12:32PM

Jonny Williams on being top scorer:

I have been enjoying scoring goals, it is not always something I have been about. I enjoy just being a part of a goal. I would never want the young players to be scared to shoot like I was when I got screamed at. But I was given that confidence by Lindsey and Gunning has continued that.

12:31PM

Jonny Williams on Austin:

It is great to have a strike like that in the box.We now have a few strikers who can play there, we didn't really have that last season and that is probably why we were short of promotion. For me I want Austin to score as many as he can, so if I can get the ball forward and get it into him, it will only help us.

12:30PM

Jonny Williams on Gunning's changes:

We want to have the ball, the only difference it we are getting it forward a bt quicker. We have to signing Austin, he's a big signing for this level. Gunning trusts us to keep the ball if we need to, but we all want to win and score goals and we want to be exciting to watch again. Mildy and Gav have been great and the boys have enjoyed it.

12:29PM

Jonny Williams on the delays:

It has been a tough period. It happened really quickly, I though Lindsey did a great job putting us in a great position to achieve promotion. But the guys have done a great job and everything went right for us against Grimsby. Ideally we would have had a game or two to keep the momentum, but we have had to wait.

12:27PM

Jonny Williams is to follow, hopefully fairly promptly.

12:27PM

I asked Gunning about Gillingham's new players changing things and how you keep training fun:

  • There is no point watching games from two months ago as things are different. When we played them before it was a terrible game, so you wouldn't want to watch that again
  • You try and keep a structure, but then you have something like a small sided game or head tennis to keep them engaged
12:23PM

Gavin Gunning on momentum:

When you get new players you get a kick but then it often stagnates. They are where they are for a reason. They have a fantastic manager, legend at Millwall and he knows what to do.

12:23PM

Gavin Gunning on rivalry with Gillingham:

It depends on the rivalry. Gillingham is a long way from here, I have heard about it. But when you are a pro footballer you get paid to play, so that should be motivation enough.

12:22PM

Gavin Gunning on loan players:

No idea.

There is no pressure on me, pressure is for tyres. I am only there to deliver a message, be positive, be pragmatic and when you have to be ruthless.

12:21PM

Gavin Gunning on energy:

It has been a tough stint for the boys being on the astro, we have tried to keep a structure and make it fun, to give them that little carrot. You have to enjoy your work.

12:20PM

Gavin Gunning on new manager:

I have no idea. There is no point in me knowing as I have nothing to do to it. I don't think about the future too much, I am just buzzing for Gillingham.

12:20PM

Gavin Gunning on having another game:

We are very methodical and there is no stone left unturned for how we will play. We definitely will recreate there Grimsby performance or there will be changes early. You have a fantastic squad, you might as well use it, so if people aren't delivering then you have to.

12:19PM

Gavin Gunning on Gillingham:

I watched the games back and they got two positive results, signed two quality strikers and Lapslie. They have done some good business and had a massive cash injection, but we are still positive.

They still have their weaknesses and we are going to try and punish them and by ten to five on Saturday I hope we will have three points.

12:18PM

Gavin Gunning on injuries:

Clayton is nearly there so all good. I don't think he will be ready this week, but next week he should be fine. He's a top pro for such a young kid and he's a future captain. Devine is back around now, people haven't seen the best of him and he has a future here.

12:17PM

Gavin Gunning on the delays:

You just have to try and keep the group positive. You have to control the controllables and keep a positive outlook.

It is unfortunate to be on the astro, but most teams at this level will have to do that. You have to manage their loads a bit more, but we have a fantastic medical team to help with that. A lot of the older lads have had operations, and the astro is not great for the hips and knees.

12:11PM

We have moved from the lobby to the upstairs, so real progress here.

12:06PM

We are still here btw. Once again it is very much a get on with your day situation and check back in one to two hours and we might finally have begun.

11:39AM

Good morning everyone. Welcome to take three of the press conferences, hopefully this one is for an actual match.
