PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Salford City v Swindon

Follow along with live updates as Jody Morris speaks to the press ahead of Swindon Town's clash with Salford City. Total Sports' Joe Acklam reports live from the press conference.

3:01PM

That is all from today. Here's hoping for something from Salford.

3:01PM

I asked Clayton about the impact of Austin:

  • He is massive in terms of wanting to drive standards and just looking at him, you want to have a career like he had.
3:00PM

Tom Clayton on Morris' cachet:

A little bit, but I have worked with people from big clubs and not been too sure. Everyone has your respect when they come in, but you want to play for him. It is not about him coming in and having this aura as he was at Chelsea, that is no different to Lindsey in terms of respect.

2:59PM

Tom Clayton on Morris as a coach:

His sessions and his attention to detail. It is crystal clear and we know what he wants. It is competitive and there is an edge to it and he is getting across what he wants.

2:58PM

Tom Clayton on brutality:

It is ruthless. You only get so many opportunities and you have to take them or someone else will take them.

2:58PM

Tom Clayton on the age of the group:

That is said a lot by different people, but I would never use that as an excuse. Maybe we need experience, maybe not. It is just a bit of a cop out to say that.

2:57PM

Tom Clayton on getting points:

It is huge. We know we need to start and we have ambitions about going up so we need to get some momentum soon.

2:57PM

Tom Clayton on back three:

No difference. We are all good players and I have played in all the positions. The formation is so fluid that you rotate anyway.

2:56PM

Tom Clayton on his form:

I haven't been happy with it. I have several gears to go through. I knew I would be rusty as it was the longest I have been out, I just need to stick at it and make it back.

2:55PM

Tom Clayton on Sutton:

The changing room was flat, we were quite quiet but that is what happens. We invited pressure and it is about learning from that and being braver. Sutton had the momentum, but we weren't panicking. They are a goal down at home and had nothing to lose. Their goals came from second phases of them putting the ball in our box.

2:54PM

Tom Clayton on his knowledge of Morris:

I think I have played against his teams. His team dominated a large chunk of that time when I was around that age group. The other part is probably for him if he knew me.

2:54PM

Tom Clayton on intensity:

It is everything. The more we practice, the more we are on the same wavelength. You need to understand different movements and triggers and when it does click it will make it hard for everyone we play.

2:53PM

Tom Clayton on Morris:

I think it has been good. He's probably up there with one of the best coaches I have worked with, him and Ed. We are still possession based, but he wants some different things that might take time.

The intensity was the big one for me, maybe coming back from injury made that harder. The transitions and winning the ball back has been the big one.

2:46PM

I asked Morris about conceding goals in patches and if he has had a rethink about formations:

  • I think it is down to a few things, Sutton was a lot about getting sucker punched when we thought we were getting over the line
  • I don't think we have played well enough in a 3 or 4 for one of them to have taken priority.
2:38PM

Jody Morris on the reaction:

I don't think there was elements of that within the game, they need to recognise opportunities to win games. When you don't use your strengths of their weaknesses then they have to know that you put yourselves in bother. What happened in the second half wasn;t what I said at half-time. There are moments where you need to stick together and also saying things how it was. We all watched the second half and we could have killed the game, but what happened was something we talked about possibly happening. I am not averse to clearing your lines if you have to, it is about choosing moments and we need to get better at that. Against Doncaster we held the ball too much which frustrated fans. When you are a young group you have to be honest.

The players were off yesterday, I didn't want it to feel like I was punishing them. There is an element where having a day to regroup is important. They were fine today, the atmosphere was good. If there are players who stew on what could have been that is not the worst. It can be nice to forget quickly, but having a chill day is good too.

2:33PM

Jody Morris on 352:

It was partially about personnel. That often determines it, as do previous performance and opposition. It is important that we can adjust, albeit I would like to change formation because we are resting or a congested period. At the minute it is about balance to get a win. It is better to make changes when you are winning, but now it is what gives us the best chance and the safest way of getting points.

2:32PM

Jody Morris on Salford's pitch:

It is a funny one. At Sutton I felt their pitch looked good, but the lads said it was hard and slippy and we felt that when we started. It didn't end up being what we thought. Where we are in the season, we are going to play on pitches that aren't great. They play the ball more than some on the floor and their home form is good, so they can deal with it and so must we. We want to play our game and try and pass the ball, at the moment if we were at Wembley we might struggle to pass the ball. There aren;t going to be many good pitches in this league at this stage. I wouldn't be blaming our performance on pitches, so I won't have a pop at Salford for it.

2:29PM

Jody Morris on Salford:

They are more of a footballing side. If we are not going to punish teams for playing like that then we have to deal with it. They might make us work harder to get the ball back. Sutton and Newport are about second balls, but Salford is more of a mixture. Salford can pose us more problems from a footballing aspect.

2:28PM

Jody Morris on performance:

I want to see us be more consistent. We have been too up and down. We are touching on things that will help us win and we are not seeing enough of them. Individuals need to produce, but we have to influence the game better than we have done. There are times when we are on top and we need to capitalise and not shoot ourselves in the foot. We need to move the ball better and give us more of a rest. We have seen twice when we were on top and not got it done. We have to nullify them from getting back into the game, as we allowed Sutton to get back into the game.

2:26PM

Jody Morris on resilience:

I saw saying to Dave, we can't hide from three results we didn't want, but if we talk about mentality then those things come from bad moments. We have to hope and try and turn these things into foundations to move forward. Nobody likes losing games, nobody more than me, the players won't like it, but it is up to us to change that. Shying away from going through a difficult spell is the wrong thing to do. We have to attack a good Salford team with a strong home record. It would be a good place to start.

2:25PM

Jody Morris on a temporary assistant:

Not really. There is a lot of work that isn't seen on the benches at games. I think there are a lot of people pulling together and making sure we work as hard as we can. My assistant not being able to do his job as well as he would like to is not ideal, hopefully that is sorted before I speak to you three.

2:24PM

Jody Morris on coping with setbacks:

We all like things to go smoothly. You just have to get on with it and hope things happen down the line. The quicker the better. When you come in and the deadline happens so quickly it leaves you short. We still have to keep our eye out and hope there is a free agent who can help. Once you get passed the deadline, there is usually a reason why they are a free agent. We are trying and working, but it is difficult and when you don't get the right results that is highlighted. I would be happy if we just had our players available. My focus is on seeing if we can strengthen, like McEachran. He was a bundle of energy, even if he was rusty. If we can get that then it is great, but if not we have to get on with it.

2:22PM

Jody Morris on Ed Brand:

I have been told so many times it will be done today. It is a collective blame. We are trying to cover our end, but there are areas that need to be looked into and might not be the priority for some. I wish I had better information, but I don't know if anyone does.

2:21PM

Jody Morris on injuries:

Tomlinson is still a way away, he has upped it a little bit. He is still away from training, but he is striking balls and doing more. Lavinier is further away than Tomlinson with his hamstring. Devine was in today, but we don't know where he is. Shade might have an outside chance of being involved, very outside. Williams won't be ready, he will nee reassessing next week and revisit some tests to see if he can even be considered. he has had a tough couple of days.

Lavinier is more than three weeks still, even that is to be confirmed. Shade has had a problem with his hamstring for a while and hasn't got any better so he had to come off it. He looked better today, but we have to see how he reacts to things he wasn't able to do. It is more how he reacts this afternoon.

2:16PM

Jody Morris is with us.

2:09PM

Elite mentality continues.

2:01PM

Buenos dias chicos. We are back at the County Ground for a press conference and Jody Morris will be with us shortly (shortly may be doing a lot of lifting in that sentence). Don't worry, I would imagine there will be some unsatisfactory answers to questions about Brand, Ward, and new signings. Get ready!
