PRESS CONFERENCE LIVE: Barrow AFC v Swindon

Live updates as Scott Lindsey speaks to the press ahead of Swindon Town hosting Barrow AFC in League Two. Total Sport's Joe Acklam reports live from the press conference.

1:20PM

That is all from today. Listen along to The Presser with LSPOD for a deeper look into Lindsey's various smokescreen answers.

1:16PM

Jonny Williams on toughest player he has played against:

Probably Arjen Robben, Ibra, or Ronaldo (no flex). David Silva too.

1:15PM

Jonny Williams on achievement on the World Cup:

They are very different as I didn't play at the World Cup. It is hard to look beyond the semis of a Euros. I have had some great days at Wembley, but playing in a semi final was special.

1:14PM

Jonny Williams on Qatari weather:

I struggle in the heat at the best of times. The evening games wasn;t too bad with the air conditioning, but training in the day was pretty hot.

I swapped shirts with Connor Gallagher as I played with him at Charlton. I was with him in his first senior games at Charlton and it was nice to see him. And I got a picture with Joe Cole, I liked to watch him as a kid.

1:12PM

Jonny Williams on where it went wrong for Wales:

Hard to say one thing. USA game we were poor first half, then Moore came on and we were on top. The second game was tough and the most disappointing, but the England result didn't help us as they had a point to prove. That put us in a hard spot against England. I can't really put a finger on why, but if the majority of the team don't reach their standards then you can't acheive what you want.

1:10PM

Jonny Williams on challenges of coming back:

I have been looking forward to it. Training wasn't too intense due to playing lots of games with Wales. People joke about it, but this is football and you have to get on with it. I had it with the Euros, going from the Euros in 2016 to playing Farnborough two weeks later.

1:09PM

Jonny Williams on responsibility:

I want to be part of a promotion. I will do what I can on and off the pitch. I will do my best and try and drive the team forward and hopefully score and create.

1:08PM

Jonny Williams on his return:

I tuned into a few games and thought we were unlucky. The Crawley game was especially frustrating. We are missing some very good players, but we have a squad for a reason. People need to take their chance now and prove their worth. As a team we need to believe we are going to score, when you neglect the chances to shoot, that is where the problem is.

1:06PM

Jonny Williams on World Cup:

Personally it was amazing. I never thought I would go to a World Cup. On the pitch we didn't perform to our levels, but it was an amazing acheivement to get there. Disappointing to be out there, but it is nice to be back.

I am sure a few of us didn't get to play, but I was happy to be involved. I didn't expect to be involved, as I hadn't played since the summer.

I will play like I do at club level and then it is up to the manager. I am really enjoying my football and have done since I joined Swindon. I want to get promoted and be a part of that and we are 8th. Very optimistic.

1:04PM

Jonny Williams on temperature:

One extreme to another. I don't think I have trained in such cold weather before. It is freezing, even the 4g is frosty and is even harder than normal. You can't train normally like on grass. The main thing is we are still out there, I am sure some teams don't have it and thankfully we have had no injuries.

12:58PM

I asked Lindsey about the Barrow defence and Wakeling's struggles against physical defenders.

  • It doesn't matter who we play against, we just want to be scoring against everyone. If we have the right mentality then we will succed.
  • We are working on everyone individually all the time. We have just been working with Wakeling on how to receive the ball coming into him. There are always ways to improve and we have plans for all the players.
12:53PM

Scott Lindsey on New Year's Resolutions:

No.

12:53PM

Scott Lindsey on changing tactics:

We are the highest shooting team in the look. Do we need to shoot even more? It is not through want of trying, we are third for clear shots on goal. We just need to convert.

12:52PM

Scott Lindsey on message to the fans:

Stick with us. We are one point behind last year, we are on track to where we want to be. I get the frustrations when we don't score, it is for me too. In a minute we will get another result like Mansfield. We are getting into good areas, we are just not finding the net.

12:51PM

Scott Lindsey on causes of goal scoring struggles:

I think there are two or three things. Our decision making, composure, and aggression. If we had those three things we would get the goals. The bigger issue is if we don't get into the areas. The stats and markers are there, we just need to convert. Some times it has to come from within, we do a lot of work in training and in chats and analysis, they just need to find out how to score.

12:49PM

Scott Lindsey on attacking play:

It is not concerning in many aspects as we are knocking the door down as much as we can. We are up there for shots, most touches in the opposition box in the league. We get into the final third with the best in the league, but getting the ball across the line has been hard. We are working on being more aggressive and getting composure in front of goal.

12:48PM

Scott Lindsey on Barrow:

It is a challenge. Wild has done really well there and their home form is good. It is a long trip so our prep has to be spot on. We are travelling tomorrow and training on the way, but we are optimistic.

They are not route one, they play football and play through the thirds. They are up there for a reason. We are looking forward to it.

12:46PM

Scott Lindsey on loan players:

We are getting close to those decisions. I want to keep Jephcott and FBT, but both could be out of our hands.

12:46PM

Scott Lindsey on Charlie Austin:

There has been a lot of speculation, and we are still in December, so we can't openly discuss what we are looking at. He has had a great career, but we can't discuss targets.

?*he is pushed on it and again says he can't confirm anything*

12:45PM

Scott Lindsey on Aguiar:

He has had a stop-start season. I felt the Bradford game ended up not being one for him to shine. I think he would shine when we have control. The midfield is our strongest department, so it has been tough for him, but we rate him highly.

12:44PM

Scott Lindsey on fringe players:

I think we have to be mindful that some have not played a lot. RHM did really well, but his last injury was after a Tuesday game and then a quick injury against Grimsby. We don't want to put him in that position again.

12:43PM

Scott Lindsey on injuries:

We are still assessing. We have some bumps and bruises and ones we have integrated back, but some have not done so much. We are not sure where we are yet. One is definitely back, I don't want to name my squad now, we are assessing as we go and every day is different.

12:41PM

I am not certain on the reason for the delay, but it shouldn't be too much longer.

12:28PM

Due to the trains, I am not going to be in the press conference in person today, but I will shortly be allowed into a Teams call.

12:23PM

Barrow are this week's opposition. Pete Wild has his team sat 4th in League Two, but a win in the bitter Cumbrian cold this weekend would take Swindon above them in the table.

12:19PM

Good afternoon everyone. After a week beset by speculation surrounding a certain man who just left Brisbane Roar, we will largely be turning attention back to football (although it will presumably come up).
