Murphy Mahoney wants to emulate the success of Swindon Town's previous goalkeepers

Murphy Mahoney is looking to emulate the success of Swindon Town’s previous goalkeepers during his season-long loan spell with the club. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam heard from the new signing.

The Reading-born goalkeeper became Swindon’s first addition of the summer last week when he joined on loan from Queens Park Rangers.

Mahoney said looking at the success of the previous incumbents of the number one spot at Swindon and speaking to Steve Mildenhall made up his mind on making the move to the County Ground.

He said: “I am aware of Steven [Benda], Sol [Brynn], Jojo Wollacott, and Lawrence Vigouroux, so I know there have been goalkeepers who have come here and been really successful and gone on to big things.

“I think the most important thing for me is to come here and help the team as much as possible and hopefully we can fly and have a really good season.

“I am so happy to be working with Mildy [Steve Mildenhall], we had a conversation in the off season and ever since I spoke to him, I have been thinking that he is someone who could help me loads.

“Already I can tell that he is going to bring me on loads, he is challenging me with different stuff to add to my game and I am all ears.

“I am trying to get as much off of him as possible and apply it to my game to be the best I can, because I want to improve at everything.

“I am coming here to apply what I have been working on at QPR into matches, gain experience, and there are probably things that I need to learn, but that is part of the process.

"I am a good shot stopper, I am brave, I will put my head in where it hurts, and I will do anything for the team to keep the ball out of the net."

Mahoney also said that playing under new Swindon boss Mike Flynn has been a long time coming, after coming very close to joining him at Walsall last January.

He said: “I was aware there was a goalkeeper on loan here last season and so there might be a slot, so I spoke to my agent about it, and I was really pushing to come here.

“My goalkeeper coach and the under-23s coach at QPR have a really good relationship with the gaffer here, Michael Flynn, so I think there were conversations there.

“As soon as I knew it was a possibility, I was desperate to get down here and that is how it came about.

“In January just gone I was meant to go to Walsall, but a goalie got injured at QPR and so they had to hold onto me.

“I was supposed to be with him [Flynn] at Walsall and I am really happy to be with him now, so everything worked out in the end.”
