Money the issue in Swindon Town transfer dealings

RICHIE WELLENS has stated that it is becoming increasingly difficult for Swindon Town to sign players, with finances preventing the Town manager from bolstering his squad. Total Sport Swindon's Rajan Hothi got the thoughts of the STFC manager as the transfer window shuts today.

Six defeats in their last eight games has highlighted Swindon's need for more bodies through the door, but as with a lot of EFL clubs, Wellens revealed that finances are not allowing him to sign the players he wants.

Departures could be needed in order to allow more players to come in, and with Tyler Reid and Cameron McGilp both leaving the club in recent weeks, it is looking like one more could follow the pair out of SN1.

"There might be one heading out, but that will be about it," stated Wellens.

"There's no point in talking about transfers because at the minute, we aren't speaking to no one.

"Getting players in is down to what we can afford and what we can't afford.

"Getting players out is harder at the moment, but getting players in is purely down to finances," he added.

Leeds United midfielder Robbie Gotts has been a name linked with Swindon recently, but Town have seemingly fallen behind in the race to sign the highly-rated 20-year-old on loan.

The Wiltshire outfit has already signed Jordan Stevens on loan from Leeds, but with Doncaster Rovers and Lincoln City rumoured to be sniffing around, Gotts could be going elsewhere, with Wellens stating he is not currently in talks with any potential incoming players.

"I don't know if it's possible," said Wellens.

"We're not speaking to any potential players, so we'll just have to wait and see.

"I wouldn't expect anyone to come in before Saturday.

"We need players, we haven't got a big enough squad to cope.

"Defensively we've got the numbers, but in midfield we're short, and with Pitman out for up to a month we're short on a striker," he stated.

With big games approaching against the likes of Sunderland and Oxford, Wellens will be eager for his side to put together more performances which saw them ease past Rochdale and Burton, but with the long injury list, it seems like signings are needed to ensure Town can compete.

However, he revealed that while he feels Town are lacking in certain areas, it is up to him to get the most out of the players at his disposal.

"If we don't sign anyone else this window, then it is down to me to get the best out of what we've got until January," he said.

"I'm sick of talking about transfers to be honest.

"If you haven't got the money, you can speculate as much as you want, but you don't have the money."
