Michael Flynn was frustrated that Swindon let chances go begging against Crewe Alexandra

Michael Flynn was left ruing missed chances as Swindon Town threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 against Crewe Alexandra. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the Swindon manager after the game.

Swindon were flying until the hour mark as goals from Udoka Godwin-Malife and Jake Young had them in a commanding position, but Michael Williams and Rio Adebisi both found the net for Crewe as Town collapsed.

Flynn felt that his side needed to try and not overplay so much in forward areas when they could just take a shot on.

He said: “Goals change games and if Chaz [Charlie Austin] puts that chance away then we are 3-1 up and they don’t go down the other end and equalise.

“There were some unbelievable passages of play from us and some great performances, but we have conceded two poor goals.

“The only thing we didn’t do was kill the game off because we should have scored more goals with the chances we created.

“We were a little bit wasteful at times and trying to force things, too cute when you just need to put your foot through it, put your foot through it and come out the other side.

“But like I said, there were a lot of encouraging performances and some real positives, so I won’t be too despondent about the result.

“The players know my thoughts about the goals we conceded and there are things to work on.”

Flynn was also disappointed with Swindon’s game management at 2-0 up, feeling that they played into their opponents hands.

He said: “We got a little bit too open, and it was like a basketball game when we needed to be slowing it down, and by that I don’t mean timewasting.

“You need to be professional and if you need to go long now and then then make them head it out.

“We played into their hands at times because they were bumping it up to Nevitt, who is quite useful, and then it is a lot to ask for the strikers and midfielders to keep pressing and pressing.

“For the first goal Murph[y Mahoney] didn’t see it until late and the second one for me is not acceptable as we stood off and let the cross come in and then it was a free header at the back post.

“We conceded two poor goals today and didn’t kill off a team that was for the taking, but I knew they wouldn’t lie down and they will be very happy to get out of here with a point.”
