Michael Flynn saw a lot of promising signs during Swindon's victory over Melksham

Michael Flynn was pleased to see Swindon Town display parts of their work on the training ground as they beat Melksham Town 5-0 in pre-season. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to Swindon’s manager after the game.

Goals in the first half from Charlie Austin and Frazer Blake-Tracy, as well as Tomi Adeloye, Tyrese Shade, and Ricky Aguiar notching after the break saw Swindon record a very comfortable win in their second match of pre-season.

Flynn said that Swindon applied much of their work in training into the game in how they worked the ball into the final third.

He said: “We have only been together for ten days now and we have worked on getting the ball into the final third, but not what to do when we get there.

“We haven’t looked at the decision making when we get there, the type of crosses, a pull back, or a floated ball to the back post or what have you.

“You have seen that when we did do it right, we looked good and scored the first goal.

“We still have some stuff to work on, but we played some really good stuff even if the opposition was lower.

“We are now going to be working on the football intelligence, moving the ball quicker, their movement off the ball to get into the right areas and find the pockets of space between the lines.

“It was a pleasing day and the most important thing for me was that we didn’t get any injuries.”

Shade played both as a wing back and up front across his 60 minutes on the field, and despite getting on the scoresheet, Flynn thinks there is a lot to come from him.

Flynn said: “When I was at Walsall it was a matter of necessity [playing Shade at wing back], I had to do it as Tyrese can play in a lot of positions.

“He frustrates the life out of me, but if the penny actually drops, he has so much ability, his pace, he is powerful, he is tricky, and he can play off either foot, you are almost thinking that I am describing a Premier League player.

“The penny has to drop with him, I am on him every day and he is going to have to gave a bit of tough love if he is going to improve.”
