Michael Flynn is yet to make a decision on Swindon Town's trialists

Michael Flynn said he was yet to make a decision on whether to sign the trialists who have been with the squad this summer. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the manager following the 3-1 win over Plymouth Argyle.

Swindon Town listed four trialists as part of their squad for their final pre-season friendly against Plymouth, with all bar Lewis Ward taking the field at some stage.

With the season under a week away, Flynn said that he had not decided on whether any of those players will become a permanent part of his squad.

He said: “I am not sure [about their futures] if I am being brutally honest, I still need to see what areas we get in and what areas we need to fill, and then what we have left in the budget.

“There is a lot that will come into making that decision, I am not going to sign players for the sake of it.

“I want to strengthen this group because you only need a suspension or an injury to change things, so you don’t want to be weak in one area.

“You want whoever is coming in to make you fully confident about that, so that is why we have been patient.

“I thought even the ones who came on late on, they did okay when they came on, so it is food for thought.

“They will be the first to know as soon as we have made a decision.”

Lewis Ward has been on trial with Swindon since he was released by Sutton United late in January, but despite Murphy Mahoney and Connor Brann being the only options in goal, his future remains up in the air.

Flynn said: “I am not going to speak about Lewis [Ward], like the other trialists, the only thing I will say is that it [the trial] hasn’t been going on that long as I wasn’t here before.

“It is a completely different story, because what one man thought about him doesn’t mean I am going to agree with it or disagree with it.

“Let’s see [what happens].”
