Michael Flynn is not daunted by facing higher league opposition in the Carabao Cup

Michael Flynn said that he is not daunted by the prospect of facing higher league opposition in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the Swindon manager ahead of the cup tie.

Swindon Town face Peterborough United in their first game of the new season and will be hoping to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup for the first time since 2014, where they defeated Luton Town 2-1 before being knocked after extra time by Brighton and Hove Albion.

Flynn said that he had come out on top against teams higher up the pyramid than Peterborough in the past and is not afraid on the gap between the two clubs.

He said: “I want to win every game, we know that isn’t going to be possible, or it is possible, but I haven’t seen it done.

“We know the realities of it, Swindon haven’t got out of this round for ten years, which is brilliant because it means there is no pressure on me.

“I would love to be the one that gets them through to the second round, that is the way I look at it.

“We know it is going to be tough, playing a team at a higher level who are one of the favourites for promotion and Darren [Ferguson] knows the club inside out and is a very good manager.

“I’ve beaten higher league opposition in the past: Watford, Swansea, Ipswich away, Gillingham away when they were higher, so I’ve had good results in this competition in the past, but that counts for nothing tomorrow.”

Flynn also revealed that Saturday’s postponement against Colchester United had posed him a selection headache as it altered his original plans heading into this game.

He said: “I am in a little dilemma at the moment of what to do, I probably would have made a couple of changes for the game win, lose, or draw on Saturday.

“Now that was off, I am still debating what to do, do I try and get everybody up to speed for sixty minutes and then make some changes or do I stick with my original plans about changing a couple.

“I don’t know is the honest answer and I will have a long think about it over the next 24 hours.

“Peterborough had a fantastic result on the first weekend with an away win, so they might look to rest a few or change it up.

“We won’t know what they are doing, and they won’t know what we are doing, the only downside to that is we have a long journey again.

“I am hoping we actually get to play this one.”
