Michael Flynn has told multiple first team players they are free to leave Swindon

Michael Flynn has said that he has told several players that they are free to leave Swindon Town this summer. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the manager ahead of pre-season.

Flynn revealed that he felt that several first team players were not up to the standard that he required and so have been told they are free to move on.

Swindon are yet to bring in a new player this summer, but the former-Newport County boss has said he is looking to trim down his squad to bring in his own players.

He said: “I have inherited a big talented squad and I want to assess it over pre-season. There are a lot of good technical players here.

“I have told the players who are not in my plans that they are free to leave the club and find a new one, I think I have been decisive in that way.

“I have been open and honest with players and I have done it as soon as I can, I have taken the time out to speak to every player individually over the summer.

“As of this moment in time, everybody knows my thoughts and where they are at going into pre-season starting on Wednesday.

“I don’t want to name any names as you can never say never in football and things can turn around, but I have been as open and as honest as I can with the players up until this moment.

“I have a very good knowledge of League Two squads and players and owners even, and I know the type of player that I want.

“The ones who I have said can go are not quite up to what I want, that is football. It is not a nice thing, especially when it is your first conversation with someone, but it is part of the job.

“For me, I think I can bring in better and I need better, I need my own players in who realise what it means to play for Swindon Town.”
