MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town (1) Northampton Town (2)

Swindon Town lost their first home game of the season in heart breaking fashion as Northampton scored late to win 2-1. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports on the League Two clash.

Following a first half that started quickly but fizzled out, Williams scored his second of the season to give Swindon the lead midway through the second period.

However, Town were pegged back when Ben Fox flicked in a deep free-kick to level the scores a few minutes later and Mitch Pinnock scored the winner three minutes from time.

Defeat drops Swindon down to tenth in the league, but still just three points off the League Two play-off places.

Scott Lindsey made two changes from the side that beat Grimsby seven days ago, with Saidou Khan’s suspension meaning Louis Reed returned after missing out last week with injury and then Williams slotted straight back in, replacing Tyrese Shade.

It was a fast start to the game, but without any real clear cut chances, the best of the aforementioned bad bunch was probably a switch ball from Angus MacDonald out to Frazer Blake-Tracy, Ben Gladwin overlapped and after receiving it crossed to the far post where the ball was ushered behind for a corner.

15 minutes in Blake-Tracy woefully under hit a back pass allowing Louis Appere in on goal, he tried to round Sol Brynn with Tom Clayton in pursuit, but the Town keeper made sure he didn’t get passed and the referee waved away claims for a penalty.

With the half fizzling out, Swindon were gifted a chance when Ronan Darcy got the ball on halfway and slid in Gladwin, he got around the side and played back to Darcy, but he couldn’t sort out his feet and the ball bounced clear.

Five minutes into the second period Swindom had a good chance as Williams played the ball to Remeao Hutton in space, he cut it back to Williams, but his shot flicked off his standing leg and was cleared.

Just before the hour mark Pinnock found space in the box, but Angus MacDonald managed to show cut off his sight of goal and he fired over the top.

The breakthrough came from a quick exchange of passes from a throw-in, that gave Williams space to drive into and he opened up his body to curl into the far corner.

The set pieces struck again for Northampton to get them level as Pinnock swung a ball in and the substitute Fox flicked it in at the far post.

Then with three minutes to play it was heartbreak for Swindon as they failed to deal with a low ball and Pinnock came in around the back to tap home and snatch a late win for Northampton.
