MATCH REPORT: Swindon Town (0) AFC Wimbledon (0)

Swindon Town’s goalscoring woes continued as they were held at home against an in-form AFC Wimbledon side. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam reports on the League Two clash.

Swindon largely controlled the first half and their build-up play was strong, but were unable to force Nik Tzanev into making a save.

The second half was more of the same as Swindon continued to make most of the running, but could not breach a sturdy Dons defence.

A draw takes Swindon up a place in League Two to eighth, but they have now scored just one goal in their last five matches across all competitions.

Scott Lindsey was forced into making four changes from the Crawley Town game due to injury as Tyrese Shade, Marcel Lavinier, and Ronan Darcy were all restored to the starting line-up, as was Jonny Williams following his return from the World Cup.

The former-Swindon man Josh Davison had the first opening as Harry Pell fed him the ball, he shook off Frazer Blake-Tracy on the edge of the box, but shot straight at Sol Brynn.

The Dons had another chance out of nothing as Brynn slipped on the turf as he looked to clear, and his kick went straight to Ethan Chislett and he looked to catch out the ‘keeper, but he got up quick enough to make the save comfortably.

Swindon had been having most of the possession and created a good opening as slick footwork from Shade got him away from Jack Currie and he ran into the area and nearly found Wakeling with his cut back, but it was well cut out by Nik Tzanev.

Another half-cleared corner saw Darcy and Blake-Tracy combine down the left and his ball looked to be inch perfect onto the head of Williams, but he can’t quite make contact.

Louis Reed outjumps Davison to get the ball to Jacob Wakeling, the striker drives forwards towards the box and slides it out to Williams in space, he gets the shot off and it goes narrowly wide of the near post.

After 40 minutes Williams came close after he found space in the centre of the field, he used the run of Shade to draw the defenders away from him and looked to shoot, but fired just over the crossbar.

A corner early in the second half could have seen Wimbledon take the lead as Paul Kalambayi ran unmarked through the crowd to get on the end of Chislett’s cross, but headed over the top.

Shade had a big chance to open the scoring after a lovely move from Swindon saw Iandolo float a ball to Darcy at the far post, he teed up Shade and his shot stung the palms of Tzanev.

Rushian Hepburn-Murphy made an impact straight after coming on as Remeao Hutton motored down the side and stood up a cross, where the striker leapt above the defenders, but nodded over the top.

Swindon continued to knock on the door and with eight minutes left Williams slid Morgan Roberts in behind, he rounded Tzanev, but went too far wide and couldn’t divert his shot on target.

Hepburn-Murphy made a great run through Wimbledon in stoppage time, played in Roberts and he was brought down from behind, but the referee gave a free-kick to Wimbledon much to the chagrin of everyone connected with Swindon.
