MATCH REPORT | AFC Wimbledon 4-0 Swindon Town

Swindon travelled to AFC Wimbledon hoping to make it a third win on the bounce. Town were looking to win back-to-back away games for the first time this season.

Wimbledon had turned around their poor home form and looked to continue their charge towards the play-off places. Michael Flynn had named an unchanged side that had toppled Accrington last time out.

First Half

Swindon started the game enjoying their fair share of the possession but Wimbledon started stronger, a huge shout for a penalty when Udoka Godwin-Malife clearly impeded Ali Al Hamadi but the referee was having none of it.

Just a few moments later the hosts had an early lead. A ball into the Swindon box was half-heartedly cleared away, a Wimbledon man fired the ball back in and the low cross found Omar Bugiel who tapped home on the goal line to make it 1-0 to AFC Wimbledon.

Swindon were struggling to get a grasp on the game, Frazer Blake-Tracy picked up an early yellow and the hosts continued to pile pressure on the Swindon goal. Bugiel had been everywhere for Wimbledon and stood up a cross that Connor Lemonheigh-Evans got on the end of, but his shot was narrowly wide.

The opening 25 minutes had been some of the worst football Swindon had played all season. Lemonheigh-Evans hit the post in the 23rd minute after wrongfooting Murphy Mahoney. Swindon were drowning under the pressure from not only the eleven Wimbledon men but also the home crowd.

Wimbledon continued chasing the second goal of the game and had two big chances in short succession. The first in the 28th minute saw Harrison Minturn make a great tackle to deny Al Hamadi, who had been sent clean through on goal.

Then just two minutes later Bugiel and Al Hamadi combined, sending Bugiel in on goal but was only denied a shot on goal by Williams Kokolo who made a last-ditch challenge. Swindon would get their first chance of the game when Dan Kemp drove forward and had a go forcing Alex Bass into action, and probably waking him up as he had nothing to do up until this point.

Michael Flynn had seen enough and made a first-half change Harrison Minturn making way for forward Charlie Austin. Swindon had been passengers up until now, and the change immediately saw results.

Swindon won the ball in the midfield scrap and Kemp was set free in behind, his ball across found Jake Young who just needed to keep his shot down but the chance was wasted.
As halftime approached Swindon seemed to be growing into the game having more joy going forward and finally, the tide looked to be turning Blake-Tracy and Saidou Kahn had chances in quick succession.

The eight minutes added on in the first half saw no real chances come and the score remained 1-0 to Wimbledon as the halftime whistle came.

Second Half

Swindon almost found an equaliser just a minute into the half Austin combined with Remeao Hutton who cut back to Dan Kemp, he took a second to create some space before firing at goal and crashing his effort against the post.

Whatever Flynn said at halftime had turned Swindon into a much better side in the second half. The passes that weren't finding a Swindon man now were and the team was flowing forward.

Wimbledon were not pushovers and still had dangerous players everywhere. They answered the spell of control from Swindon by going close to making it 2-0. Lemonheigh-Evans found space in the box and flashed a shot narrowly wide of the post.

With an hour gone the home side struck again. Swindon had put up a better display but Wimbledon were just far more clinical. Armani Little scored a beautiful goal from a short free-kick, the forward struck home from 25 yards out finding the very top of the top corner to make it 2-0.

Following the second Swindon had a huge shout for a penalty. Kokolo broke free down the wing and crossed in finding Austin who had a shot that clearly struck an arm but the referee waved it away.

The hosts killed the game off in the 80th minute Al Hamadi was played into acres of space and he confidently tucked home to make it 3-0 and the game was well and truly over. Just to compound their suffering Wimbledon added a fourth in added time. Al Hamadi had his second and condemned Swindon to a humiliating 4-0 loss.
