League Two teams are putting themselves at risk with current spending - Michael Flynn

Michael Flynn said that League Two clubs are putting themselves at risk with their spending so far this summer. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to Swindon Town’s manager ahead of their trip to Bristol City.

Swindon Town have made just one signing so far this summer, Murphy Mahoney on loan from Queens Park Rangers, where many rivals have made splashy additions like Stockport County landing Nick Powell.

Flynn said that despite slow progress in the market for Swindon so far, he believes that he has been given the tools he needs to be successful.

He said: “When I talk about overpaying in terms of wages, I am on about individual players, so I think you are almost looking for something there that is not there.

“In terms of questioning the budget, what I will say is that a lot of League Two clubs are spending a lot of money this year and if they carry on doing that then they won’t be around for many more years.

“They are way overextending on what they actually bring through, whether there is a wealthy owner coming through and topping it up, I don’t know.

“The bottom line is that they won’t be able to keep those figures up over the long term.

“We are in a place now where we are picking up from the past and we are doing things the right way, an affordable way.

“We are not being gung-ho and just throwing money at things that we don’t need to do.

“I have said that it [the budget] is competitive and I inherited a talented squad with a lot under contract, which is unusual at this level, and it has given me time to look at the players here and where we need to improve.”

Flynn did say that reinforcements are on the way, however, with a signing likely to be completed today.

He said: “Hopefully we will have news about one coming through the door today, this one has been on the back burner for a while.

“There will be more, but they have to be the right player, I am not going to rush in and pay over the odds for somebody that I don’t think will make us better.

“We have been very patient and prudent in the way we are doing it and hopefully that comes to fruition when we get the right players in.

“I know the fans are getting frustrated, hopefully today’s one [signing] will give them a little bit of a lift, and it won’t be the last one, so that is all I can promise you.”
