Jake Young was delighted to score his first Swindon goal after a tough spell last season

Jake Young was delighted to get off the mark for Swindon Town after a difficult time last season in front of goal. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the goal scorer after the match.

The striker made an instant impact off the bench as he scored within two minutes of his introduction to put Swindon two to the good after Udoka Godwin-Malife had bagged in the first half, only for it to come crumbling down through second half goals from Michael Williams and Rio Adebisi.

Young said he was very pleased to be able to get his first goal in red and white in front of a large home crowd in his first league appearance for Town.

He said: “Personally it was a really good feeling, and I was really happy to do it [get off the mark] at home in front of that many fans and make my mark on the game.

“It was a really good feeling and hopefully there are many more to come.

“The team is what I really focus on and I am disappointed that we only got the point, but hopefully we will build on that and there will be more to come.

“It was a big relief for me for that first one to go in, so hopefully that is the floodgates open and there will be a few more to follow.

“I know I have it in me; I can score good goals, I can score tap-ins, and all kinds of stuff.

“It was a difficult spell last season, but everyone has them and I am still young, so it gives me the opportunity to learn from it.

“I feel like I am at a place now and a club where I can kick on, so I am really looking forward to it.”

Young also revealed that despite such a rapid start to life in a Swindon shirt, he barely had time to warm-up at half time after learning he was coming on.

He said: “I didn’t have too long [to get ready], to be fair, I had to go in and get a few instructions on what we were doing at pieces and bits like that.

“I had to get my shirt on quickly and just get into it.

“The gaffer [Michael Flynn] said to me to just go and get into it, affect the game and score a goal.

“I took that literally and went and did it.”
