Jake Cain used his time in lockdown to perfect his free-kicks

Jake Cain said that he used his time in lockdown to perfect his free-kick technique. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the midfielder after Swindon’s 2-1 win over Crawley Town.

Cain scored his first goal for Town late in the first half of the final league match of the season with a marvellous free-kick from 30 yards out that flew into the top corner.

The 21-year-old said that he has been working on his technique for several years and was very pleased to be able to get his first goal in senior football.

He said: “I have had a few testers in the last few games, I hit the bar twice, so as soon as we got in that position, and we got the foul I though that it was me all over.

“As soon as it left my foot, I knew it was in and when it went in I was delighted, it is my first goal at the County [Ground] so I am buzzing.

“As soon as it hit my foot, I thought that it was going in, you can see I started running off to celebrate, so I was really delighted that it went in.

“I practiced a lot in lockdown. I kind of mastered my technique and my run-up and stuff like that.

“I scored a few when I was at Liverpool and then it was about taking it into a men’s environment and doing it in front of a crowd.

“It took a lot for me to settle in and I have been in and out of the team, so I know that I have a lot more to prove.

“Hopefully this is something that I can bring with my set pieces and then go and add more goals to my game.

“I want to show the fans what I can do and hopefully today gave them a little piece of that.”
