Gunning asks fans to 'keep being positive' despite another Swindon Town defeat

Interim head coach Gavin Gunning asked Swindon Town’s fans to “keep being positive” despite admitting his side stunk the house out during the first half against Doncaster.

Goals from Maxime Biamou and Hakeeb Adelakun put the visitors two ahead at The County Ground.

Paul Glatzel pulled a goal back for Town a minute into the second half, but the hosts were left to ponder a 2-1 defeat.

The reverse meant Swindon have won just once in their past 10 League Two games, having now lost three on the bounce.

Asked on the club’s official Youtube channel if he had a message for the club’s fans, Gunning said: “Listen, I 100 per cent get their frustration. The thing is – don’t take it out on the players.

“That’s the thing, they are just trying to… they have got to be out there and just give their best for this club and try and bring us forward.

“I think if the fans could keep being positive. I know, when we stink the house out, like we did in the first half today, it’s hard for them.

“And I get it, I fully understand that, having played myself, you’re going to be disgruntled – but I think the second half shows what we can do.

“But it’s too late, you can’t dominate games again and have two stinking goals. You switch off, lapse of concentration. It’s on repeat.”

Defeat left Swindon 19th in the league standings, with 44 points from 39 games.

“The result is another loss which is terrible. The first half was like Accrington 2.0 – shocking,” said Gunning.

“We couldn’t have been any worse – it was just a realism of where some of the lads have got themselves into a mentality of where they are at and they need to get out of that quickly.

“I don’t know how that can be possible. When you have a performance on Tuesday that stunk the house out, you know the fans are doing to be disgruntled.

“You know they are going to get on you at times because of the season we’ve had – then you go and give that pile of rubbish in the first half.

“I just wasn’t happy. Made a couple of tactical changes – it worked. Listen, we probably should have got a draw, even won the game to be honest on stats performance but we didn’t.

“You give them two goals, that’s what you’re chasing. You have a lot of chances. You don’t take them. That’s football.”
