'A real embarrassment' - Gunning left fuming after Swindon stunned by Stanley

Interim head coach Gavin Gunning described Swindon Town’s performance as “a real embarrassment” as they slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Accrington.

Aaron Drinan gave Town the advantage at the County Ground with an alert finish from inside the box.

But Jack Nolan struck just short of the hour mark from the penalty spot before Alex Henderson gave Stanley a winner eight minutes from time.

Speaking to Swindon Town’s official YouTube channel post-match, Gunning said: “I think a lot of soul searching to go on, myself included. The performance – me being the head coach - has to take that on the chin.

“For the type of person and player I was, when the fans come, you cannot go off the pitch with that performance and that intensity – and lack of it.

“A real embarrassment. I’m embarrassed myself but it’s a big game Saturday and we’ve got to take the three points, no matter what.”

Defeat left Swindon 18^th in League Two, with 44 points from 38 games.

Examining the display further, Gunning said: “A terrible performance. The worst by a long way.

“There was no intensity, we were flat. We gave them two goals which are just individual errors again – compounding one error with another for the penalty.

“It’s just not acceptable for this club.

“Anybody watching the game can see what happened, it’s simple. It’s been a common theme this season that you need to take ownership in your performance.

“It’s no coincidence we are 18^th in the table because we shoot ourselves in the foot. We go 1-0 up, we should get on the front foot.

“We actually make a mistake and do the opposite, try to complicate things, it turns over and they score. It’s just very, very, very frustrating.”
