Gavin Gunning said Swindon failed to execute their game plan

Gavin Gunning said he was disappointed with how Swindon executed their game plan as they beat Crawley Town 2-1. Total Sport’s Joe Acklam spoke to the interim coach after the game.

Charlie Austin and Jake Cain both scored late in the first half to see Swindon take all three points, despite Dom Telford’s penalty.

Gunning thought that the game lacked quality for the most part, but Swindon made the most of their opportunities.

He said: “The performance was average, we didn’t really implement the game plan too well, even if we did score the two goals.

“It was a bit of a basketball game and there wasn’t a lot of quality in the game, but the moment there were came from us.

“They had a couple of half chances and the penalty is just a bit slack, maybe the boys got a bit tired.

“I just wanted [Charlie] Austin to be playing in a deeper role, he is a clever player, but unfortunately it didn’t go that well.

“He [Austin] played quite well, but the game plan wasn’t going fantastically, it was a bit hit and miss.

“The decision making wasn’t great, but we won the game and that is the main thing we were looking for from the match.”

Gunning also said he was disappointed that Austin did not take Swindon’s penalty during the half which was missed by Rushian Hepburn-Murphy.

He said: “I actually went to the toilet during the penalty and I didn’t realise Charlie hadn’t taken it.

“I came back and saw that we had missed it, so I knew Austin couldn’t have taken it.

“Obviously, I was not happy about that and I was going to take both of them off, but I decided not to because we were playing well.

“I thought it would have been Jephie [Luke Jephcott] to be the one who took it.

“It is like something from school where because you win the penalty you get to take it.

“Obviously Chaz [Austin] has scored about a million goals in his career, so he let Rush [Hepburn-Murphy] try and get one, so it is what it is.”
