Five Things We Learned: Swindon 1-2 Oxford United

Total Sport's Ryan Walker has offered his take on the five things we learned from Swindon Town's 2-1 defeat against Oxford on Sunday.

1) The team has no backbone

After taking the lead over fierce rivals Oxford at the weekend, it appeared that Swindon Town's poor run of form was coming to an end.

But at a stage when resilience was needed the most, Swindon flopped and ended up losing the match. The players might say they deserve more from the match , but when you concede two goals in three minutes, there can be no excuse.

2) Not enough experience in signings

When Luke Williams announced that Swindon would be busy in the January transfer window, many fans were relieved as they expected experienced and established players to be brought into SN1.

However as time went on it was clear with signings such as Fankaty Dabo, and Jesse Starkey, that Tim Sherwood and Williams had decided to stick to their guns and put their trust in youth.

But as the season nears its conclusion and with Swindon braced for a nail-biting relegation battle ,more proven signings such as Nicky Ajose should have been made by the Wiltshire club.

3) Prepare for the worst

Three defeats on the bounce and no home win since the 26th November, a 1-0 victory over Bradford, finds Swindon Town in an all too familiar relegation battle sitting in 20th position on 29 points. They may not be in the relegation zone yet but their recent form is that of a team destined for the drop.

4) Williams has to go

Whether Swindon stays in League One or get relegated to League Two this season, the simple fact is that Luke Williams has to go.

When appointed Head Coach on a five-year contract in March 2016, many eyebrows were raised at the longevity of the proposed stay as Williams made the switch to the head role given his inexperience in management.

And with Swindon Town playing some of the worst football that fans have seen in a long time, change is needed. Whilst Williams may be a good coach, he isn't manager material.

5) Lack of chemistry

When your side finds themselves at the lower end of the league table and set for what looks to be a closely contested relegation battle, unity within the side is needed both on and off the pitch.

However after going behind in Sunday's match against Oxford, it looked as if Swindon were a team of 11 individuals instead of one collective. A win is needed to raise the confidence within and around the club, but the team needs to work together if they are to start to climb the table once again.
