EFL clubs to hold AGM to vote on the future of the EFL Trophy

Clubs in the English Football League, including Swindon Town, will vote on the future of the EFL Trophy at an AGM.

The EFL Trophy, that was a re-branding of the Football League Trophy, was introduced ahead of the 2016-17 season, but attracted a heap of controversy, mainly as it included Premier League and Championship under-23 teams.

Many supporters saw the introduction of under-23 teams, or 'B' teams, as a sign that they could be included in the actual lower divisions, like in Spain and Germany, and therefore fans boycotted matches as a sign of protest.

There will be three options for the club representatives to vote:

1) A revamped EFL Trophy.

2) A return of the original format of the Football League Trophy (better known as the JPT).

3) Scrapping of the competition entirely.

A revamp of the EFL Trophy will see the prize money awarded to teams increase "significantly", regionalisation until the quarter-final stage (currently round two) and rule changes with regards to player eligbility.

Currently, five players from the previous leage match must be included in the following EFL Trophy match, but this would be reduced to four, with clubs being allowed freedom to play a second-choice goalkeeper.

No official date for when the AGM is has been given, but what is for certain is that it will be sometime in May and there has been no indication on how Swindon Town will vote.
