A striker is the next top priority for Swindon manager David Flitcroft

Swindon Town boss David Flitcroft believes the top of the pitch is where he most needs to strengthen his squad next.

Flitcroft has brought seven new players to the club already this summer, but six of them have been defensively-minded players, with forward Paul Mullin the exception.

Chris Robertson and Oliver Lancashire are both centre backs, Ben Purkiss is a right-back, Chris Hussey is a left-back while James Dunne and Amine Linganzi are a pair of midfielders that operate in a defensive role.

Swindon currently have two senior strikers - Mullin and Luke Norris while Scott Twine and Jordan Young are also contracted to the club, but the latter two only have six professional appearances between them.

Norris was signed from Gillingham last summer but he struggled in his debut season for the Robins, as he scored just four league goals in 39 games. Mullin got eight in 40 for Morecambe in League Two last term.

Following the 7-1 win against Swindon Supermarine on Saturday, in which Mullin scored a hat-trick and Norris scored once, Flitcroft was asked if there was a particular area that needed strengthening, to which he replied: "Yeah, towards the other end of the pitch.

"We've got Luke Norris, who carries a big presence up front but Luke Norris might get injured tomorrow so you can't throw all your eggs in that basket and can't become a busted flush, so that's something that we'll be looking at.

"We've had a look at certain things, because obviously we're still at the recruitment stage, of what we're doing, it was good for us to have a look, just from an initial point of view of the matrix of the squad."

Town had five trialists in action at the weekend, one of whom was a striker - Jordan Slew, who scored the opening goal.

Flitcroft did not divulge whether Slew will be given a contract, or if he had any other names in mind.

Swindon are next in pre-season action when they travel to Melksham on Tuesday night.
