A Look Inside The Graceful & Elegant Fashion Legacy of Queen Elizabeth II

This fall, the British people had to say goodbye to a beloved monarch who led the country with dignity and determination for 70 years.

Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, managed to keep her role as a wise leader even during times of change when the idea of the monarchy didn’t have as much meaning as it used to.

Plus, she managed to maintain a strong sense of self and identity that lives on even after she left. Her sense of duty entangled with her poise and elegance continues to inspire people from all over the world.

As a homage to her legacy, today we’ll look at the fashion items that solidified Queen Elizabeth II's unique sense of style that held ground for years in the public eye. But be warned - Her Majesty’s legacy, even in fashion, is all about integrity and identity.

There won’t be any glamorous fashion choices that make you think of a Hollywood star, even though she was one of the most powerful monarchs in the world.

The Making of a Unique Style

During the last period of Her Majesty’s life, we got used to seeing her in tweed suits accessorized with matching hats, gloves, and handbags. Of course, for each occasion, there was a specific brooch adorning the Queen’s left side, and word has it that the brooch often had a hidden and diplomatic meaning.

Her Majesty’s collection of jewelry is quite extensive, and we’ve seen several amazing accessories over the years. However, she always favored simplicity whenever possible. So if you want to follow in her footsteps when it comes to accessories, you’re better off with these fascinating Ruby earrings than with something that stands out more.

Playing with Color

The one thing Her Majesty loved to play with was color - her suits and dresses were often in bold, easy-to-spot colors such as green, red, purple, yellow, fuchsia, and so on. This was a master mover on her part, given that her height and stature were on the small side.

She used color to make sure everyone could see her in a crowd and to communicate warmth and joy to her people. Luckily, colorful fabrics and patterns seem to make a comeback this year (check out these fashion trends for the 2022 fall) so you can feel inspired by the royal fashion sense.

A Style Built for the Public Eye

According to Angela Kelly, her trusted personal assistant, all the clothes that entered the royal wardrobe had to pass a series of rigorous tests. For instance, the fabrics must have an anti-crease appeal and limited rustling. Plus, all skirts and dresses were weighted at the hemline to avoid even the idea of a Marylin Monroe moment.

Plus, during summer, most of Her Majesty’s dresses and blouses had subtle prints to make sure there won’t be any embarrassing marks showing. And if Her Majesty was on a diplomatic visit overseas, shed’ use custom-made outfits designed to fit the country’s culture and customs (in a subtle way).

Sensible Shoes and an Iconic Hairstyle

These are two other defining elements of the Queen’s style that helped solidify her image in the eyes of her subjects and the world. The sensible shoes are easy to understand, especially after a certain age, but her hair took a bit of work. And yet, in an effort to stay consistent and recognizable, Her Majesty kept the same routine over the years.

Now, those close to her say that she was never much of a fashionista. She felt comfortable in regular clothes and enjoyed spending time with her horses, but she put in the effort to create a fashion style fit for a royal interested in staying close to her people. For this and many other achievements, we honor her memory and cherish her legacy!
