Public Encouraged to Have their Say on Revised Plans for North Star Development

Local people are being given the opportunity to have their say on plans to redevelop the North Star site - near the Oasis Leisure centre.

The consultation will take place in Oasis Leisure Centre on Friday 20th March from 1pm to 8pm and on Saturday 21st March from 9am to 4pm.

The purpose of the consultation is to offer the public a further opportunity to give views on outline planning proposals for the development at North Star.

These have been revised following the earlier consultation. Subject to any amendments to the plans arising from the views expressed, these plans will then be submitted to the Council.

The objective of the North Star development is to complement the refurbished Oasis Leisure Park, where extensive modernization works are now nearing completion.

The plans include a state of the art snow facility with a 200-metre ski slope, a multiplex cinema, ten-pin bowling, a hotel and a range of leisure-related retail. Cafés, bars and restaurants also appear on the plans.

Moirai’s Chairman, Martin Barber, has commented on the proposals:

“The development will be at the heart of the community, and it is important that the public have their say on its development; so we are extremely keen to discuss our plans with them and to hear their suggestions and ideas.”

Councillor Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Economy, Regeneration, and Skills, said:

“This is a very exciting development for Swindon and I am really pleased that things are moving forward and we are close to seeing outline plans being submitted.

“The regeneration of the town was badly affected by the recession, but many millions of pounds are being spent on breathing new life into our town centre and this scheme is further evidence of the private sector seeing Swindon as the ideal place to invest.

“I would encourage people to attend the consultation events and give their views so they are taken into account before the plans are submitted.”

Following the outcome of the public consultation, and any changes needed in the light of views expressed, the plans will be submitted to the Council for outline approval.
