Teach a Learner How to Drive

Every driver remembers just how daunting and stressful it can be when you first learn to drive. One of the best ways to reduce stress and master the basics is by having a friend or family member teach you, so if you have a loved one that is learning to drive, then you will want to do what you can to help.

Can You Legally Teach Them?

The first thing to do is to make sure that you are legally allowed to teach them how to drive. To teach a learner, you yourself must be over 21 and have held your license for at least 3 years. In addition to this, you must be qualified to teach the same type of vehicle that they are learning in (manual or automatic).

Get Learner Driver Insurance

Another important consideration is insurance. You want to make sure that you have the right coverage in place in case anything happens during a lesson and you can get learner insurance for a day to ensure everyone’s safety and for peace of mind.

Get L Plates

It is also a good idea to get L plates for the car. While it might be embarrassing, you will find that it is important because it alerts other road users that the driver is a learner. Usually, people will be more forgiving and understanding as well (although not everyone!).

Take a Familiar Route

When learning to drive, it is always helpful to drive around areas that you know so that you can focus purely on driving and not directions. Therefore, you should discuss a route that they feel confident with whether it is in their neighbourhood or somewhere that they drove during a lesson.

Plan Lessons Based On Their Private Lessons

It is also important to consider what they have been learning in their private lessons and to work on these skills. Learning with a friend or family member is mainly about practice, gaining experience and working on what you have been learning from a qualified instructor, so you want to talk to them about what they have been doing in the lesson and then work on these areas.

Teaching a loved one how to drive can be a rewarding experience and they are sure to appreciate it greatly. It is also not an easy task, so you need to plan ahead and make sure that you are helping them as best you can and complementing their private lessons.
