TGtS Meets...Josh Goldsworthy

Over the last 12 months Swindon born hairdresser Josh Goldsworthy has worked backstage at London, Paris and Milan Fashion weeks, was chosen to become a member of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing FAME Team and even managed to get his hands on Cara Delevingne's tresses. Read on to find out more about Josh's momentous year...

Given your family’s long standing history in the industry, were you expected to become a hairdresser?

No, in fact I fought against it all through my childhood. It was only at 16, after trying something else, that I finally admitted to my family that I wanted to come into the business. It's always been the photographic and awards element that has intrigued me.

What’s been the proudest moment of your career so far?

There have been many!  I've been shortlisted for Wales & South West Hairdresser of the Year twice, the most recent being this past year. I’ve presented in front of 2,000 hairdressers at an industry event in Paris, worked backstage at London, Paris and Milan Fashion weeks and been a member of the Fellowship for British Hairdressing FAME Team.

Tell us a little more about joining the FAME Team 2013 and the opportunities that came with it.

The FAME team stands for Fellowship Academy of Merit and Excellence. Each year 4 rising stars in the hairdressing industry are picked to represent the fellowship and take part in a years’ worth of intensive training and experiences. These involved icon days, which were days spent with industry experts who shared their tips and ideas with us, we produced photographic collections as a team for GHD as well as presenting on stage in the UK, Spain, France and Italy. The year was a fantastic way to develop an identity in the industry and get your name out there for future work and events. I really loved my time as part of the team, but am now focusing on building on top of those experiences.

What’s your favourite perk of the job?

I get to flirt with women all day and work with gorgeous models, all in an innocent way I should add (in case my girlfriends reading!!).

Who’s the best celebrity that you’ve styled and why?

Last year I was lucky enough to work on a shoot with Cate Blanchett for W Magazine in Berlin, fashion week shows with Cara Delevigne but personally I really loved working with Kirsten Dunst for a L’Oreal hair campaign that has recently been released. She was really lovely and down to earth and I managed to get her hooked on Candy Crush!

Which one hair tip do you swear by?

Hair preparation is key! When it comes to show and photographic work the hair prep is key for a long lasting and often good foundation to a look. By this I mean getting a strong hold product dried into the hair to give hold, and get the hair moving in the directions I want it to be it through blow drying, tonging etc. It gets hot in front of a camera or on stage and the last thing you want is for your hairstyle to go limp.

What’s the one product that you couldn’t live without?

Like I said prep is key, I have 2 favourites 1 being Kerastase Elixir which is a deep nourishing oil for all hair types and the other is TIGI Queen for a day, it’s the best blow dry product on the market, effectively a light spray moose that is key to creating voluminous looks, I use the pair on almost every client, model or photo shoot I work on.

Have you got any advice for someone who wants to start out in the industry?

Make the decision do you want a job or career, because of you want a career in hairdressing you really have to work at it, often for little financial reward but for enormous satisfaction.

Which hair trends do you predict being big in 2014?

Unfortunately the public are still looking for the ombre and dip dyed hair colours but we in the industry are trying to progress this into something new and if I’m honest more professional looking. We’ve started to see the presence of balayage hair colour which is a free hand placement of lighter tones where the hair catches light giving it a much more softer and natural effect. The other is a colouring technique we ourselves are developing which we call “the middy” which is a darker root blending into a lighter mid band which blends out to a darker end colour again, this acts as a shine line through the hair.

What does the year ahead hold for Joshua Goldsworthy?

FAME AND FORTUNE. But seriously, I’d like to continue working hard and hopefully achieving my goals. This year I’m hoping to develop more of my session work and build my portfolio of work up. I’ve taken on a role within the Fellowship for British Hairdressing that will see me getting more involved in the development of Clubstar (a partner of the Fellowship aimed at young hairdressers) so I’m looking forward to that.
