Racecourses Close to Swindon
Although there are no racecourses in Swindon, fans of horse racing don’t need to travel far to have a day at the races. Swindon is fortunate enough to be near some of the best venues in the UK.
Here is a look at some of those and what makes these racecourses so special.
Cheltenham (33 miles)
Cheltenham Racecourse is considered to be the home of jumps racing in the UK. It hosts the biggest meeting of the year in March with the Cheltenham Festival. This features the best horses, jockeys and owners.
The Cheltenham Gold Cup is the Blue Riband event of the sport and this takes place on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival. Galopin Des Champs tops the horse racing betting online at 7/2 to win the race in 2023.
Irishman Willie Mullins is the most successful trainer in the history of the Cheltenham Festival with 88 winners. His horses are likely to be included in the horse racing predictions to win many of their respective races in March, including Allaho who is the 7/4 favourite for the Ryanair Chase.
Cheltenham Racecourse is just 33 miles away from Swindon. Given how difficult it is and costly to find a room in the Gloucestershire town, many racing fans stay in Swindon and travel into Cheltenham on the train during the Festival.
Newbury (28 miles)
At 28 miles from Swindon, Newbury Racecourse is the closest venue to Swindon. The Berkshire track hosts both Flat and National Hunt racing, meaning fixtures take place across the calendar year.
One of the most prestigious races at Newbury is the Group One Lockinge Stakes, which includes some of the best milers on the Flat in May. It was won in 2022 by Baaeed, the highest-rated racehorse in the world.
As well as their racing cards, Newbury also host music nights, with some of the biggest artists playing on a stage at the end of the meeting. These are very popular, and they offer great value given the amount of entertainment you get.
Ascot (54 miles)
If you are happy enough travelling a little further to a racecourse, then Ascot, which is 54 miles from Swindon, should be on your list of tracks to visit. It is regarded as one of the finest in the world. Like Newbury, it also features Flat and National Hunt racing at the highest level.
Royal Ascot is the biggest meeting of the year. This takes place across five days in June. Before racing, the Queen and various members of the royal family feature in a procession across the racecourse. It is one of several traditions which makes this meeting so special.
If you prefer jumps racing, the Ascot Chase in February is a race not to miss. It was won in 2022 by Fakir D’oudairies. Its roll of honour also includes Kauto Star, Silviniaco Conti and Cue Card, three very successful National Hunt horses.
Enjoy your next trip to the races whether you choose one of the above three courses or others. Remember to check the racecourse’s official website to find the latest fixtures, ticket information and dress code before you travel.
